these types of mods aren't for function, imo...just temp mods to show new products in ways too difficult for some 2 understand (ie. some may think its a waste to have an iPad stuck in your dash all the time)...great for show, promo, etc.
but +1 on all the fail mentioned above. lol

While I would never do this in a G (it doesn't fit sideways like the Totyota), but I have my opinions on your responses. (in a good way )

Glossy screen = my factory nav screen is glossy with no issues. The iPad is a lot brighter then factory.
No (real) GPS = 3G version will have AGPS which is better then GPS. There are several excellent nav apps for iPhone which will surely be ported to iPad versions.
No external storage = I agree, but most Handbrake videos are less then 1.5Gb and 64gb is a lot of storage, but external storage would be great. Sure someone will jailbreak it and allow the external storage via the camera connection kit (i.e. USB).
Additional $30/mo for internet on it = Check the prices on wi-fi for the car or mobile hotspot ($60 on verizon).
No "standard" phone functionality = Not a phone so why would it have this, but otherwise I am sure VOIP app will come along.
No FM radio = Umm, iHeart Radio and several other apps do this.
No AM radio = See above.
No steering wheel interface = I agree, fail, but I am sure someone could build a dock connector to Steering wheel control box. Or infrared iPod dock could be hacked somehow.
Locked to AppStore = Ummm, aren't windows software locked to windows computers, Mac to Mac, etc. I fail to see why this is an issue. Either you can create your own apps or look for a dev who has/will. The only drawback is you have to download from App store which I see as a good thing since you don't have to hunt the internet for the app.
Only syncs with iTunes = iTunes is great IMO. Never had an issue with it.

I don't agree with you saying AGPS is better than GPS. I'd take the GPS on my HU/nav telling me turn by turn directions, auto-updating routes, etc. over the AGPS on my iPhone.

The other and probably biggest issue with an iPad in a car is heat. Apple rates the iPad to run up to around 95ºF. In a car, thats just asking for trouble.. and there are already reports of users having heat issues during normal use.

That's a lot of fail.

I think that goes back to, this is more for show then function. Good luck to anyone that actually tries, will be pretty cool to see.

AGPS - I hope you don't drive outside of AT&T's 3g coverage area.
External storage - I have over 60 gigs of MP3s. I am not alone. Hoping for hackers to make up for the artifical limitations imposed by apple is pathetic.
$30/mo for internet - Tether to my existing 3g phone, maybe, let me use it with my "unlimited" data plan with existing 3g iphone (if you have it)?
No FM radio - Yeah, slacker radio and other radio apps are great, but they're not local.
No AM radio - same as above.
Steering wheel controls - I wouldn't be surprised if somebody did one up, but it's still a fail compared to every other in-car-entertainment device.
If you only buy music through iTunes, and only use iTunes to listen to your music, and only use apple media players, iTunes is OK. But if you go to www.7m3.com and download the latest free 7 Mary 3 track to your Music folder, when you start up iTunes, does it find it? If you have lossless .flac files purchased from artists through bandcamp.com, does iTunes have to dupicate the songs to sync them to your iPod? How long does iTunes take to load when you have about 100 gb of music?
iTunes sucks.

you can create your own apps or look for a dev who has/will
You forgot the part when you hope that the approval process that is never explained by apple allows your app. Duplicate functionality that Apple claims they already have? Disapproved. Use gestures that they don't think anyone else should have access to? (pinch zoom anyone?) Disapproved. Apple makes an app similar and they don't want competition? Removed.
There's no similarities between the app store and programs written for an OS. The AppStore is a completely arbitrary dictatorship of what you're allowed to do on YOUR device.

If you need any other entertainment in your shagpad, an iPad won't help you.

I think the iPad bashin might need moved to the political thread.

On a another note, a full touch screen center stack would be sweet. A/C, Audio, Nav.

Wrathernaut I totally agree with you. The reason I won't get an iphone is cause itunes is such a militant force on your pc.

And not to mention, all the other points you made were WAY relevant as well.

It is a really neat video. I like the idea of a large touch screen on the dash. I imagine in the near future it will be fairly common to see computers with full touch screens in the dash of a vehicle...

That soundman guy did do a very nice job installing. I imagine the cost of parts alone was rather high though...

I think Steve Jobs has gone past the crazy point. He needs somebody to tell him NO.

If you're reading this Steve, you don't own the products people bought from you. Stop telling us how we can use it. It's a computer. Stop telling us what software we can run with it.

However yesterday Apple Messiah CEO Steve Jobs announced myriad another batch of red tape which will make matters even worse. The changes affect the so-called developer’s agreement required to access tools for building apps for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. They add significant new restrictions to software makers hoping to create products for Apple’s mobile devices.
