2 way vs 3 way component and speaker placement

Hey all,

Right now my current setup is:
Kenwood ddx712
boston acoustics se65 2 way components up front and SR coaxials in the rear
75x4 amp
400w RE audio amp powering 2 RE flat subs in 4080 boxes.

I have a set of older series Rainbow 3 way components and was wondering whether its worth changing out the boston front components to this 3 way setup.

just wondering advantages/disadvantages to this setup and also where would i mount the 4" midrange? I know a few people have done 3 way before so I am just curious about whther I will get better sound quality with the 3 way rainbow setup vs the 2 way bostons.

I tried doing some searching but couldnt find any definitive info on this or any mounting setups for a 3 way in our cars.

The setup sounds pretty good already, but I have never heard the Rainbow components before, so I can't say whether it would be worth it. I just know my Pro60se's sound fantastic.

If you haven't done any vibration dampener or sound barriers, they would definitely be a more productive use of time/money/effort.

a 3 way wont always sound better

a proper 2 way is the way i like to go in a car

more speakers doesnt always mean better sound.

if you have the 3 way ready to install, play with the placement and crossover(s) of each driver.

perhaps I will do some sound dampening next as well.. as far as mor speakers, I dont necessarily think theyll be better because theres more speakers but I do think that the sound quality of rainbow speakers is typically better than bostons. any opinions on that?

If you're willing to put in some trial and error work or pay for a quality installer, I'd say go with the Rainbows. I was always a big fan of their speakers but they do need a proper install which, well, the G's don't have a ton of space so that can be tricky.

You're going to want to keep the three way set as close to 'on plane' as you can which kind of sucks because the logical placement for practicality would be lower mid in the door, mid and tweet in the kick. It can be done that way but ideally you'd want all three in the kick panel and that's going to take some work.

If you can swing it you know you'll be happy with it, hell the Rainbows are your speakers, you know what they're capable of.

Secondary concern to keep in mind though is what kind of signal processing you have access to if you go with the Rainbows. I'm sure they came with passive crossovers but you have a lot more options available with an active crossover/dsp unit so you might want to consider building that into your cost/install planning.

Post pics if you decide to do it, would love to see the result. Good luck!

thanks for the info leksikon. yea i still have to think about whether its worth the trouble or not and if so how to get it to fit properly. I do love the speakers though they are the older model.
