Trunk build questions

I have an 07 sedan but I figured I would get more traffic here and its not really specific to the new gen anyway. So, Im a senior in HS (going to SU next year) and in my school our fourth quarter is designated for an internship. At first I was going to try to work for myself (under one of my company names) but they nixed that. So, I took a trip 20 minutes away to the place where I got my windows tinted and get most of my audio and video equipment for my car. Ive been there a bunch of times and the owner is a really cool guy. He is always amazed at some of the goodies I buy (deep pockets for a HS student lol). And when hes ringing me up he says when can you pick up the car and gives me a total including installation at which point I tell him im doing it myself and he cant understand how or why haha. Anyway, I went there the other day and asked to do my internship with him and that's what im going to be doing! The point of this story was that I called him up the other day and asked if while I was working there, if there were some slow days, if I could build my self a sub box. He said sure!! Plus on top of being able to use all the tools and materials for free, he has my OEM trunk carpet in stock. And the best part... A guy with a h2 dropped off his car two days ago for 2x L7s to get installed.. He had 2x JL 12W3v3 and he is giving them to the shop for free.. The owner said I can use them if I want!!!!! The only thing I need to buy (order) is an AMP which I will get at cost and wiring which they have there already. Any suggestions on amps? and any ideas about the box? I either want to build it into the back of the trunk with the amp in the rear deck or put a sub with a box on each side firing towards each other but angled forward with a false back behind the seats (back of the trunk) with the amp inside with plexi in front. Please, give me some ideas!

Sounds like you should be talking with the shop owner about amps and box ideas.

You can always check out the custom installs thread for ideas:

For starters..use 1 sub, not 2.

2 w3's will need a semi big box to perform right. Somewhere around 1.75 sealed each after sub displacement is taken into consideration. 2 cubes each if you go ported.

What ohm load are the subs? single 4 or single 2? They're 500w drivers, but you don't need to give them that..i'd shoot for around 300-400 @ whatever ohm load the driver is.

Wiring..since you'll be getting it at a discount, take advantage. Do the big 3 in 0 gauge. Use 0 gauge from your batt to distribution block, then run 4 gauge to each amp. I'd also throw a big batt under the hood for good measure.

You are in a great position to learn hands-on and teach yourself. Build a simple sealed test box (a quickie), load a sub and move it around in the trunk. If the shop you are working for has some test gear put it to good use. You will learn more about bass reproduction in a vehicle that way than any box program will tell you what you "should" get.

The bottom line is that if you figure out the tricks first then implement proper enclosure construction you will get the full potential out of your sub and see that subs in a perfectly designed enclosure on paper but in a poorly chosen location are a waste of potential energy. GL
