12V outlets rating, (2nd try)

I just bought an inverter that I will use to run a lap top off the outlet.
Lap top is supposed to need around 80W but with DC to AC(inverted) and then back to AC to DC (laptop PS) at the laptop input may end up drawing around 120-130W at the DC outlet itself due to all the losses.
Just trying to avoid buying one inverter that I can use to mutitudes of electronics as needed like laptop, PDA, etc

More then likely your laptop will rarely draw 80 watts. Even if its one of those laptops that uses desktop components over mobile ones, 80 watts is still alot for a laptop. It would have to have the processor and all components going at full speed to draw its maximum wattage. Long story short, I doubt you'll blow a fuse running a laptop off of any of the power outlets even with an inefficient inverter.
If you do, the real way to wire up something with high power draw would be to run your own low gauge wires directly from the battery, fused of course. You could just replace the power lines leading to a power outlet with your own 8 guage from the batter and then be ready for significantly more power draw. Just throw a relay in between triggered by the power line from the old power outlet if you don't want the outlet on when the car is off.

god_of_cpu,
I will forgo the wiring part for now but thanks for the idea, I might try it if I get stuck.
The back of the lap top says 16vdc @ 4.5 amps so I came up with the conservative ~80w but I think it might be the peak value and would run around that for short intervals only.
Anyone knows which fuse protects the 12v outlets??
These are one of the fuses near the battery?
Thanks
