open air sub question
So this is probably going to be one of the stupidest questions asked on the forum, but if its not.. could be cool for me.
im working on my fiberglass sub enclosures , but ive lost a lot of drive to finish them (the smell kills me), but i have been working on everything else, so as of tonight, il have everyone wired in my car and all that is missing is attaching the sub wires and the the subs.
my stupid question:
would i be able to take a board, screw in my sub rings, and mount my subs upside down like open air subs for a few days? not a permanent solution, but to get some ooh's and ah's from friends while im down at the beach this weekend.
they are rockford fosgates 10" punch stage 2. as im writing this i realize that it is a pretty stupid idea, but if it works, it could be nice for a few days.
please dont flame !

Actually its not a stupid idea at all, if the sub were free air "infinite baffle" this would be possible, I am not sure if the P2s are or not but im thinkng they arent. If you did want to go this route, I would really do it by just making sure the cone and the rear of the subs are isolated from each other, if any air gets through then the sub will not sound good and it will be like playing the sub while its just sitting on its magnet in open air ( you will see it move but but get very little to no bass).
Any sub is capable of being played without an enclosure in a free-air environment. Some sound terrible and some sound phenomenal. If your going to do it you really need to keep an eye on the cone excursion. Most subs will take half the recommended RMS wattage if ran free-air as just a rough estimate. Don't go crazy with the volume and watch cone excursion. You will blown subs easy going this way because you lose the volume of air inside the box acting on the sub to limit suspension movement.
What your doing though is probably not going to provide a whole lot of output though. You have to isolate the front wave from the back wave to effectively have a infinite baffle configuration.
Good luck and be careful!
