Reality Check - Stereo Revamp

I have an 05 coupe with bose. I think it sounds aweful.

What I really want is a clean, balanced system. I am looking for something that sounds great but I don't care for tons of bass, probably something small and sealed and I will try to make a box similar to the JL audio one (and not pay 500 for it )

My thoughts are either do just a DD HU and keep the bose, or do the whole system over like such:
  • DD HU & OEM DD Kit ~ 1000 (JVC KW-NT3HDT)
  • Mono Amp & (1) 8" sub ~ 350 (Alpine SWR-823D - unsure on amp)
  • Dual channel amp & comps for front ~ 400 (Want Focal Integration IS 130 cause they're Focals.. and no crossover box to mount - unsure on amp)
  • Misc Harnesses/Wiring ~ 200

I was pricing out stuff and it's looking like about 1800 for a revamp. With that said, is just a DD HU going to significantly impove the sound of the OEM speakers or is a complete overhaul in order? I will be installing FYI.

I was just kinda sticker shocked. I want to do it right, and if I go this route I can put it in another car, but jeez 1800 is steep. If anyone has suggestions on quality but affordable speakers/amps let me know. I'm kinda set on the HU but I don't know much in terms of speakers and amps. I don't want bargain basement, but don't need OCD Audiophile stuff.

That's a good headunit & the OEM kit is definitely the way to go if you care anything about looking right.
Have you looked into the boxology 10" box (the design that 4080 used for a while)? It sounds very good in my vehicle.
Focals up front is a good choice as well, soundstream reference series would probably be a good match, although they're not small amps, they're very clean SQ.

With a setup like that, you definitely should invest in sound deadening. My full recommendation goes to www.sounddeadenershowdown.com. Best advice and product available there.

Sounds like removing all the bose junk is the way to go, huh

A ten is bigger than I had wanted to get. My friend has a 10 in his M3, and I feel it's too much bass. I just want something better than 6x9s - something dedicated to bass.

I am no stranger to sound deadening. I did it to my altima, but man that was some **** to do. I didn't even touch the radio, I just did it for my OCD. It made talking on the cell bearable. I used spectrum sludge and raam mat. I saw second skin has a new "thick" damper mat that seems pretty nice.

....but I wasn't planning on doing the G. What areas would you recommend? I did the doors, trunk, and the rear half of the floor in my altima and was pretty happy. It totally removed the exhaust note which I wasn't so happy about. I don't want that happening in the G.

Are they reliable? Just worried about them dissapating heat properly if I mount them somewhere tight. I've also never heard of that brand (but I'm no audio guru either).

Very reliable

I install A LOT of soundstream amps. They make the best budget and mid tier ones on the market.

Major spots to deaden in the g are the trunk lid, doors and rear deck
