Install new speakers: space between speaker and door panel trim cover?
#17
Top Teke -- what spacer did you use to mount your speakers? Was it one of the Metra or Scosche 1" speaker spacers? Did you a set of the Nissan & Infiniti 1" MDF Speaker Spacers from ZenClosures?
I have the Metra 1" speaker spacers, but it seems the only way to mount the speakers using these is to get 1.5" screws, drill new holes into the metal side panel, and attached the screws through the speakers and spacer into the metal side panel. It seems like the MDF spacer ring is a cleaner and simpler installation option, and you don't need to drill new holes into the metal side panel.
Any opinions?
Thanks,
Cameron

I used a set made from MDF that look more or less like the ZenClosures set you mentioned. My inner hole was larger though, to accommodate the speakers I installed.
It sounds like the Metra spacers aren't lining up with the door panel; if that's the case you'll just need to drill new holes. If you're not eager to do that, if there are any car audio shops nearby I'm sure you can pick up some MDF ones there - Even a BestBuy with an "install bay" might have some for you.
If you're going with the ones you've got on-hand, I'd just place one where I want it and use a sharpee to mark the first hole. Remove the spacer, drill the hole, replace the spacer, and screw in the first screw. Then, with the spacer more or less in place, drill and screw the second hole, securing the spacer. Then end with the third. Make sure to add the weatherstripping baffle to the back of the spacer before you get started so that when you drop your third screw in you're good to go. That way you minimize possibility for error and the spacer is as sung as possible.
