Through the miracles of GPS. It comes with a map of North America on DVD, no monthly fees, but yearly map updates are available for a fee (you don't have to upgrade, though). No, but they've managed to hook 3rd party DVD players into the stock display and audio system.

If you go to uncharted areas, or newly developed areas, you'll just see your arrow driving in the middle of no where. It's pretty cool to watch, just not so cool when your actually lost.
