Factory Buttons on Metra Kit?

Factory Buttons on Metra Kit?
I am so out of the G mod loop and cannot remember back when I had my 05 G and did all the sound system stuff. But my buddy just bought an 03 G sedan and wants to upgrade his headunit since its doing the typical HU going out symptoms. My question is, can you put the factory buttons on the metra kit? Like pop them off and use them? Or is that a no go?
