Clarify info about video signal types/Nav screen...

okay, so someone clarify this for me please. So component connection is the standard Y, B-Y, R-Y, which is used for most HQ dvd to tv connections in the US, right? And these are a derivative of RGB color information so keep bandwidth down.

okay, so our Nav screens use a RGB+sync wire. in other countries they use RGB instead of component as the standard (like australia). so as a cheap dvd to nav solution couldn't you wire in a passive RGB switch and hook up a RGB dvd directly to the switch? a passive switch is what, like 50 bucks. plus a rgb dvd player, like 100 bucks.

If i'm totally off, someone let me know. I'm assuming this is how the NAVbox works since the xbox has RGB output, it just acts as a passive switch between the nav and the xbox, correct? thanks!

I don't see why it wouldn't work.... I was looking into building a conversion from either Svideo or component video to RGB but couldn't find enough info to get the project started. I would imagine someone out there would have to make one comercially.

i tried doing the rgb with the xbox. The only problem is that damn sync. My screen kept going from left to right.. Hopefully the vga to rgb will work but i doubt it. but if it does my total cost will be $25.

Converting from component video (YPbPr) to RGB requires a transcoder to maintain sync. Products are available, but they go for around $200. Here is a link to one such device.

i believe generator was trying to make a VGA interface to the NAV and succeeded but its not really practical. It seems to be more complicated than just RGB to RGB because of the different sync frequencies... i'm still trying to find a good solution to connect a PC to it... the xbox apparently offers the best quality right now. I'm not completely sure why a connection to the xbox is easy to make but a regular component or VGA one is harder...

This wouldn't be necessary for the Xbox or playstation, i think they actually have RGB outputs...

We covered that up top, they Xbox does have an RGB output but the sync apparently is different. I then said I would like to convert 'normal' sources to RGB and thats what the link was for.
