without the plastic frame is fine as long as the controls work

I might have that for you, I have to double check. I initially bought the Metra kit when doing my radio install but ended up not using it. The reason was because I didn't think the screws tightened up enough so I used some thread locker or glue on the plastic and it melted the stud posts that the screws went into. I'll get back on this with some pictures for you to see if you're interested.
