In case anyone's wondering, you can fit an 8" woofer into the front doors. I just installed a set of Dynaudio 8's from a Volvo C70 into my car yesterday. It's a fairly straightforward job of making a template, cut the hole, some damping mat and a 1/2" spacer. Can't wait to get some real power going to them...
I hope that doing a lot of anti-rattle work on the doors is in the plans. Even with just about 150w per door going to 6.5's I'm finding lots of shortcomings in the factory door interior panel assembly.
Agreed, OP do you have enough air space in there for the sub to develop the proper sound? Seems awfully restricted having had my doors opened up a few times.
As a side note, being a high Q driver it's more about separation of the front and rear wave than "air space". Add in they have a low FS, and this is they're intended location in the Volvo they came out of.
