No voice prompts from phone module

No voice prompts from phone module
I have an '06 6MT with the sport package.
When I start the car, the orange LED near the "phone" label (center, headliner, forward of the sunroof) blinks 10 times, then goes dark. I never get a voice prompt for pairing my phone. I tried the setup procedure in the owner's manual - may have messed it up - and I never get a voice prompt.
Suggestions? My friend from whom I bought the car said it was working for him. (And I have no reason to doubt him.)
