Radar Detector Stealth Install?
Why don't more people who want a stealth install go the route of taking the V1 apart and mounting the sensors in the front and rear bumpers? Is this less effective than having it on the dash or windshield??
If you do that, then you can get that rearview mirror on eBay that has the remote display mounted INSIDE of it.
You can't get more stealth than that: Sensors in the bumpers with the display in the rearview mirror.
Makes me want to do it that way since I live in VA and detectors are illegal.

That's funny, I've always run my V1's (in 4 different vehicles the past 10 years) behind a tint strip at the top of the windshield and always pick up signals from a mile and farther away. Never failed me. Sure maybe the range is SLIGHTLY reduced but it's hardly significant unless you're running a crap unit to begin with. Feel free to go argue with Mike Valentine about it though and tell him he is wrong.
In addition, upper windshield placement is the only way to go for a stealth install, IMHO.

I wouldn't recommend taking your V1 unit apart since it will void any warranty and it sound pretty difficult. Besides, mounting it in the bumper will be way too low especially if you're already following someone and they'll be blocking the radar signal. On other cars, I have mounted the V1 on the dark tint strip and still receive a strong signal close to a mile away front and rear. I've also mounted the unit inside the 3rd rear headrest of an IS300 and it worked with good results just as long as you cut out front and rear holes for the V1 senors. For the G35, I plan to mount it on the tint strip on the passenger side corner in an enclosure to keep it stealth.
