Carputer QUESTION!

Hey guys, I'm new to this whole carputer thing. I've looked at previous posts about it and learned a few things about it but still unsure bout some things. Everyone has pretty much used the digitalwheelz screen for their carputers.

I would like to put a carputer in my car but the problem is I already have the Eclipse 2454 in. Can I hook the carputer up to it? Can I get the digitalwheelz screen along with the unit I already have? I don't want to have to get rid of the headunit I already paid a lot for.

The other things I need to know is about how the computer works in general. The touch screen works to opens the programs? You dont need a mouse or a keyboard or anything? If that's the case how easy is this to use? I appreciate anyone's help. THANKS

i self-installed a carputer in my car with the stock headunit. the entire process is pretty straightforward but is very time consuming and frustrating at times. i dont quite understand your question regarding your eclipse? what do you mean by it not working with it?

there is already a lot of software on the net custom designed for the carputer. Yes, the touchscreen will allow you to not need a mouse or keyboard, though it might be a good idea to keep one around.

go to mp3car.com for technical advice though. i will post pics if you like!

Yes, you can use the digitalwheelz screen if you have an aftermarket head unit installed. It should install in exactly the same way.

I'm assuming the eclipse head unit does have generic RCA inputs. If it does then yes you can use it with a carputer. The two problems you will have is that the resolution will be very poor and small text will be unreadable and you will not be able to use a touchscreen on it.

In terms of carputers, how easy it is to use is determined directly by the software you run. If you run the right software, you should never have to use a keyboard or mouse. UbiquityV, http://www.digitalwheelz.com/UbiquityV_About.htm, the software I've designed for in car use, was developed around this philosophy. It is controllable by the steering wheel controls, touchscreen gesturing (like PDA grafitti), voice control, remote control, and traditional touchscreen control. While driving I rarely have to look at the screen to do any of the most common functions.

Ok thank you guys! I see what you guys are saying. The carputer can basically do everything the Eclipse can do right? So if I was to do the carputer I might as well take out my eclipse and put the stock back in. Would there be any advantage in keeping my eclipse unit with a carputer (installed with the digitalwheelz screen)
