How does Navi voice interact with/override stereo?

Does the Navi simply output an audio output to the stereo, which in turn "senses" the voice and mutes the radio? Or is it on a proprietary bus?

Reason I ask - I have stock stereo and Navi. I would like (optimally) to find a simple audio output from the navi, splice in an audio output from a cellular hands-free device, and have it play through the stereo automatically.

See where I am going with this... ? It would just be a matter of matching the audio output of the hands-free to the audio output of the Navi and splicing in.

My first few searches didn't yield much, but I got more creative and found this:

Thanks for doing the legwork. I have a carPC that acts as my "HU" and am looking at bluetooth phones. I have been trying to figure out how to bring it all together so that using the phone in the car isn't such a pain...

I actually just received the Tellphone 4000 and was looking at ways to mute the audio too.

I installed this last night. Works great. As soon as I start the car it links up with my phone. The voice activated dialing works great too.
