How Hard Is It To Change The Door Lock Actuator At Home?

to make a long story short, i have voided my warranty because the guys who installed my alarm clipped a couple wires which they should not have. they fixed it easily using butt connectors and now im screwed because infinity has voided my warranty and need to replace the DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR ON DRIVER SIDE.

please!!!!!!!!! DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND A CHEAP ONE? HOW MUCH ARE THEY AT THE DEALER? CAN I DO IT MYSELF? ETC ETC. any info i s appreciated. RX

Wow, that doesn't sound like much fun.

If you do need to buy one, you can get it here.

Why do you need a new one? Did your modification break the part?

Are you familiar with the Manguson-Moss Warranty Act? It essentially says that aftermarket components don't void warranties. If the aftermarket part causes a problem, the warranty doesn't cover it. But the aftermarket part has to cause the problem for the warranty not to cover it.

Unfortunately, it can be hard to actually use that law, but it might help.

I agree with looking into your rights as a consumer. The laws are by your side. Mag-moss act is very simple to use as the dealer has to Prove that the part/wire in question was a Direct cause of any issues. If they can prove that, then your on your own, of course it can be somewhat difficult to prove, its not just a techs word and your done.

On the flip side, why should you have to buy and replace the actuator? Why isnt the guy/shop that screwed the car up taking care of all of it?

BTW...what wire could they have cut to screw things up? The only wires that need to be cut would be the two starters, Nothing else at all.

THE wires they cut were 2 of them going to the door switches. it was 2 wires that i think they were going to use to hook up the lock/unlock wires from the Viper alarm. it appears they cut the wrong wires because they just butt connected them. the lock unlock that comes from the viper is soldered directly to the board on the door switches. anyway, i unsoldered that wire but the wire from the car that was butt connected is visible. im sure its the actuator and nothing else since its what everyone else has had the problem with. dont know what to to because im not sure its worth the time. Theres no need to cut those, theyre simply spliced in at the switch. Any competent installer would know this.

i guess youre right but thats besides the point as im trying to figure outr what to do. i would just pay the 130 or so for the damn actuator if i knew for sure that was it and do it myself. i just want my friggin door locks to work. can some one tell me how hard it is to get to the motor and fix it myself? im assuming i just remove the panel and then the aluminum piece and its accesssable. can someone plese help me as far as doing it myself? screw the dealer, i will do it myself but want to make sure that i dont need a special tool or anything like that, although i guess if worse comes to worse, i can have someone else install the motor after i buy it and try to do it myself. anyway, i just wish i knew what the problem was.

1. can someone give me an 99% chance that its all it is? (that its the actuator? given the symptoms?)
2. That it can be fixed easily, with no special tools?

thanks Guys, girls

RX

Maybe youve gotten no response because no one has done it?

yea thats what i posted. I just wonder how involved a job it is. i assume i can buy a Chiltons at worst if i cant figure it out but i have taken the panel of before to replace my speakers and i believe its just an extra metal panel, cant remember what holds it in. with my luck, a special tool and then a gasket or two to replace. thanks anyway. I dont think theres any special tools needed, although the window motor is also attached to that metal panel IIRC. Once you remove the (approx) 8-10 bolts holding that panel, then youll notice its still extremely hard to remove. I believe its the window motor and/or partial tracks as well.

To gain access to the door lock motor that panel needs to be removed. With the window motor attached to it, it is difficult to remove. IIRC the window motor must first be removed via the visable bolts, then that panel *may* come off.
