Escort Passport 8500 X50 wiring?

Hi all, sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I just figured since it was electronic related.....

I just bought an Escort 8500 X50 radar detector, and I'm planning a hardwire install. I've read the threads on this board and gotten some great ideas. My question is specific to the Passport: which wires should I use on the phone plug jack side to get power to the unit? I'm going to make my own cord (bought a phone cord tool from walmart plus wire and jacks) but I want to make sure I know which wires I'm supposed to use. I'm assuming its the red and black for positive and ground, but I figured I'd ask before I went and did this. Anyone?

I dont' know the answer, but an you could always just plug it up and probe it w/ a voltmeter to find out. that way you aren't vulnerable to misinformation.

I tied into the 12v behind the cigarette lighter... I purchased the X50 smart link cable, which has the remote on it... It was $30. I'm glad that I got it because I'd hate to have to reach up to mute i every time i get any activity.

Definitely worth the $30 for the remote harness. I had them throw it in for free when I ordered... but anyway.

I shoved the remote in the ashtray since I will not ever (nor anybody else who values their life) smoke in the G. I can close the door for stealth.

trebien, thats where my x50 is mounted too

except mine is about 1.5" lower so it doesnt have any interference from the sun blocking strip..if u get lasered and pulled over, all you gonna do is shut off the detector and flip the visor down. works good...hahaha (lasered going 22 over in Kansas City on my way to the hospital) i guess the cop was nice to me as my ticket was 101 dollars.

I dont exactly understand how flipping the visor down will help much in hiding the detector. Can someone take pics to show me? ( mounted my X50 on my rear view mirror today and played with flipping the visor down, didn't seem to hide it very well tho....

Are radar detectors illegal where you live or something?

I hardwired my 8500 tonight by using just a regular telephone wire I had lying around. FYI, the pinouts on the 8500 cord is the red carries the power and the green is ground (the two wires in the center). On the tele wire I was using, the wires were arranged differently (reverse of the wires on the 8500 cord), and stupid me it took me a bit to figure that out. I stripped the telephone wires gently and soldered them onto thicker wires close to the end. I ran the telephone wire in the headliner and down the driver's side A pillar. Then I grounded the ground wire on a bolt near the fusebox (had to take off the plastic piece that holds the fusebox door) and used a mini ATX fuse doubler from Pep Boys to get power to the power wire of the telephone cord. I chose to put it in the accesory plug fuse port. Overall, looks good and you can't see the telephone cord except from the detector to the headliner. I'll snap some pics tomorrow if I can remember.

If you're a do it yourselfer, you can use a telephone wire, but if you want to save yourself from having to do the soldering and figuring out the wires, get the inviscord. I would have done that, but I'm impatient and couldnt wait for shipping. :-)

There is 2-3 day priority, lol!

I sent out a "tweaked" version of my standard cord to TomCatM, so we shall see how he fares with this revised one. With a more flattened set of connectors and shrink tube all the way up the collar, hopefully he finds this to be a cleaner installation. I am still holding off adding the G35 to the directions until I have an idea of the type of mirror and their wire colors.

Also, does the 350Z share the same homelink mirror and wiring?

I'm thinking of getting the X50 sometime soon. Where's a good place to get this from at a cheap price? Also where do you guys get the remote from? Does the remote come with it or would I have to buy it seperately? And also, what's the cleanest way to hardwire this unit to our G... Does anybody have a DIY instructions (with pix preferably)? I'm not really electricly knowledgable.

Sorry for the 10 million questions at once.

Thanks.

No problem, Best Buy had the lowest prices consistanly. But don't expect to see one for more than 5% off list. I think they (Escort) control the prices pretty tightly.
