After market Nav...$5,000?

I just got back from the "Audio Image" store up the road and they are saying that an after market Nav installed will run me somewhere under $5,000
This is for a Bose/Clarion replacement or one located on top.

That seems excessive to me considering the Nav goes for about $2,000.

I think I will keep looking, any suggestions?

i dunno how their pricing is but you could check out Street Effectz in Colonia.... the E46Forums and Acura forums swear by them and their work is top notch. (they recently had a Mustang they built on the cover of Road & Track's Road Gear magazine). when i contacted them about working on my car their price didn't seem outrageous for the amount of work they were going to put in. i ended up going DIY but if i hadn't, i would have brought the car there for sure.

their website is streeteffectz.com.... doesn't have any pics or info up yet (it's being re-done i believe) but their contact info is on there.

Thanks! Mapquest says they are only 18 miles from my house. I think I will check them out.

AutoImage tends to be quite pricey, especially the EB or the one right around the corner from me (Edison) locations, but $5G?? Just a tad bit outrageous. Ive been told a million times that my prices are usually better than them, but Dayum !

I deserve an award for keeping a straight face when he was quoteing prices. I was expecting something around $3,000.
He said the price was due to their labor.

Apparently I should consider leaving the Beaver State and move my shop to the Garden State.

http://www.digitalwheelz.com is your friend. Aftermarket screen that looks like the stock nav screen. Total install should be under 2k and not take nearly as long as installing the real stock nav. See here for all the components need for complete install http://mr2bob.com/G35.htm

You are getting ripped off:

http://weblogs.asp.net/ajuneja/archi...10/427107.aspx

see that?

yes, that does navi.
yes you can talk to it. (My own software... www.speakwithme.com is my company)
Yes it did cost me more than 5K, esp. since the JL amp in the trunk was replaced with a McIntosh one.

But just the screen + the headunit + double din is WAY less than $5k.
For 5K you could have something that sounds close to what I have in my car.

Eclipse 5495 is ~2K, as are the Pioneer AVIC N1/N2/D1
Double din kit is $400
Labor time should be about 2 hours for this. So, $150 - $200 for install.

Go elsewhere.

Why not save you money and keep using mapquest. Sounds like you got it down.

You can buy NAV for a laptop with GPS for around $150.

Well now, 5000 sounds bit high at first, but we all assumed that they are going with D/D route, what if the shop going to fiberglass it into the cubby hole or into the lower part of the dash where the ashtrey sits now? the labor cost alone could be upwards of 1~1.5 G (15~20hours @75 per), and he didnt say what kind of "aftermarket" Navi system is going to be, and we all know some of them could be close to 3k if not more with likes of Alpine IVA-D901 with NVN-N852A or the kenwood's KVT-915 with KNA-DV4100...so 5 grands isnt all that unreasonable, of course they are cheaper options, which you all have mentioned...
