Looking for a simple audio upgrade........
Looking for a simple audio upgrade........
I don't wanna get into subs, amps, crossovers, head units, etc. I just wanna replace the minimal amount for a better sound. So I don't have the Bose system or anything like that from the factory. Basically I wanted to know if I could just replace the factory speakers for a louder, crisper sound. I'm looking to get a set of MB Quarts or possibly Boston Acoustics. Are the fronts coaxials or components? I haven't looked at my doors in a while to see if the tweeters are mounted up higher; separate from the bottom speakers. And also what size are they? If you could help me out with the rears (size wise) that'd be great too.
Thanx for your help,
Chris

I'm in the process of gathering info on doing some work on my own non-bose system. Basic specs are: 6.5" components in the front, and 6.5" coaxials in the rear. Some debate whether or not the speakers are 2 or 4ohm, and if they are driven by an external amp or HU. Chances are they are only driven by the HU, and they are 4ohm. Supposedly, any speaker upgrade will sound better than stock. Should be pretty much a straight swap, you'll have to get some 1" spacers however. You should replace the fronts for best sound, rear's dont do too much.
Like I said, this is what I've pulled off the boards so far for the non bose systems, but there isn't alot of info out there because most people have the bose system. I haven't checked it out for myself yet, but I plan to do it as soon as the weather gets better, which looks to be the spring. Until then, I can only speculate, unless someone here has done it for an 05 coupe already..... Please chime in!

What is your biggest complaint about the sound? What are you looking to improve?

G spot, thats not very nice of you to call him out like that. Actually, El_duderino is where I got alot of this info, so I'd apologize if I were you. The rest of the questions you have I'll let you find them on the board, they're not buried very deep.

I advise on like 6 different vehicle forum audio sections, and there are many people who don't search before posting - so in that way you aren't special : )
No harm no foul.
What you describe - being able to crank it with no rattles or cracks - is a little more complex than we all would like it to be.
The biggest reason for distortion when you crank up a system is running the amp hard enough that it runs out of power. When amps run out of power, they usually don't hit a brick wall, they just provide even more power but with objectionable levels of distortion included.
So I don't believe that you can have what you want using the OEM amp (IF your non-Bose system even uses an amp on the fronts - I don't remember seeing a diagram on non-Bopse coupe wiring. I will pull one tomorrow...
I DO beleive that you can have what you want without a sub - depending on your program material. You can fit big 6's in the G, even if you can't fit big tweeters.
But the next question is, what are the last 2 CDs you bought?

El_Dude has a good point. It does depend a lot on what your musical tastes are.
Mine are not rap, however, I do like hard rock, and a like to have a little bass in my music. Thus, I have a subwoofer, but I don't have it turned up to any extremes. I would recommend finding someone with a G with a decent system, and listening to it with and without the subwoofer, and then decided on whether or not you need a subwoofer. While it is true that you can make a great system without a subwoofer, if you do end up wanting bass, and you compensate by turning up the bass on the other speakers (since you don't have a sub) you will cut down on the ability of the speakers to replicate the other frequencies.

A good start would be to replace the speakers. I replaced my door speakers with infinity kappa (2 ohm - I have the Bose). The difference is amazing, then you can decide if you want a sub, more power to the door speakers etc.
