Ipod in the Ashtray
Ipod in the Ashtray
About to get my ipod installed into the 03 manual coupe and I really want to find a way to get the ipod placed in the center console ashtray. That way the connections can be hid and the ipod is easily reached.
Has anyone done this? I've searched around but haven't found anything as of yet.
Here are some pics of what i'm talking about (not actually mounted):

I will take a picture of what I'm doing with my nano. It doesn't stand up, but you might like it. Basically- if you have seen those "no slip" sticky pad things that people are putting on their dash that you can set your shi* on top of and it won't slide when you turn, etc...
I bought one of those, cut it to fit the "bottom" (when it's open) of the ashtray and I lay the ipod down on it. I have the PAC-AAI-NIS2 installed and have a RCA-to-1/8" stereo adapter plugged into AUX1 on it. The 1/8" stereo plug comes out the right side of the console. I lay the ipod down with the screen on the left side of the tray, so the headphone jack is facing the right side of the car. I plug the 1/8" stereo jack in and I'm done (the ipod will sort of hang out at a slight angle when the stereo jack is plugged in). The ashtray light illuminates the touchwheel of the nano so I can easily press "next song" or "pause" or whatever while I'm driving.
When I get to where I'm going, I disconnect the stereo jack and either tuck the ipod fully into the ashtray and close it, or I take it with me.
This is all pretty temporary until I get my car pc up and running, but I find it works really well and only cost something like $5. Only thing it doesn't do is charge the ipod, but I have the car charger adapter in the glovebox that I can whip out and hook up if I happen to run out of power... but I charge the thing everywhere anyways so I never run out of power when I'm in the car.

I'm also in the process of devising something a little more permanent. It includes an iPod 60gb, part of the dock and a direct connection in to the USA SPEC PA11 I just got yesterday :-) I will definitely post pics when I get it done...I am starting this weekend. Oh, the important part: It will sit in the ashtray holder, and you can close the ashtray when you are done with the iPod for a stealth install.
So you would rather have the iPod hanging on the side of the radio with an aftermarket clip? Granted, it wouldn't get in the way there, but it sure wouldn't look good! (Seems as though that is your concern) At least this way, you can close the ashtray afterwards, and you would never know it was there.
