Yeah, I've thought about it. I didn't want to lose that storage place though. It would have to be modified too, because the lid doesn't come up high enough to clear the ipod if it were in there. I saw one other guy who removed the lid to install the ipod, but I didn't like the look of it. It looked unfinished.

Here's some updated shots. You'll notice the angle of the iPod is MUCH better. It is now angles back for better viewing. I accomplished this by placing two rubber "stoppers" about 1/8" thick to stop the ashtray from fully opening up. I also reinforced the connector by wedging and hot-gluing a piece of plastic in between the connecter and the sidewall of the ashtray.

Thanks dude. Sorry, I don't have any pics from the side...I will try to get some. The 2 KEY things in this install is the "stoppers" that prevent the ashtray from opening up all the way (this gives the iPod the correct angle), and reinforcing the connector within the ashtray insert. I would highly recommend using the ashtray insert as a "skeleton" or frame for the dock and the connector. It gives you a solid frame to work with. Also, I'm not going to lie....the tolerances are VERY tight in this install. It took me a while to cut everything just right to get it to fit. Since I made my corrections, I have had NO problems, and it just absolutely rocks. I love how I can just get in my car a pop the iPod into the docking station, and when I'm all done, I just close up the ashtray and no one would ever know!

Well, you could just plug the connector into the back of the docking station, but the key thing is that the docking station won't fit in the ashtray. That's why I had to use the dock insert and make my own "docking station". I hope that answers your question...

Could you modify the dock at all to make it fit?

No, it won't fit in the ashtray. I actually took a dock apart hoping I could some how hack it up to fit. Honestly, this is the best way to do it in the ashtray. If you were putting the dock somewhere else, then I would say go for it...it would be easier too.
