Question about 4080 box and sub

Hey all,

I have a couple of questions to pose to the group. I am sorry if they ahve been answered before but I couldn't find them with a search.

I currently have a 4080 box stuffed with a Diamond audio 10D3. I have a JL e1400D amp pushing it. I recently took my other car out for a spin ('95 prelude) and listened to the stereo. I am amazed at the difference between my G and the prelude in terms of bass power. I have a Rockford Fosgate 501bd pushing an Alpine type-R 12" woofer. That system has roughly the same power as my JL amp but it hit soooooo much harder than what I have now. I set up my JL amp to output the proper wattage based on their procedure (voltmeter and sine wave).

My question is, is the diamond sub just that inferior to the alpine or do I need to tune my system better? Would I be better off with a different woofer (I was thinking either a 10W3 or W6)?

One other question, did those who put a W6 in the 4080 box need to modify the box in any way to let the driver fit?

btw, I have an '05 coupe 6MT.

Thanks,
Jason

Without more details my first thought would be the box. Is the lude's box sealed or ported?

Alright, after further consideration I think I am going to replace the diamond audio sub with a JL. I am leaning toward a W6 but I also am looking at the W3. My concern is if the e1400d can push the W6 or not. Any opinions?

Try to sell what you have in terms of amp & sub in your G now. Then get the 10W6 and a JL 500/1 amp. You'll like that setup.

I'm sure I will but I would rather not have to do that. I think that the e1400D is good enough for what I would like to do and I would rather not sink that much cash into the sound right now.

Having done an install and subsequent upgrades.... If you don't have the funds to do it the way you envision it now, I'd say wait until you get the resources together to build an optimal setup for yourself later. It's delayed gratification, but you'll save the headache and $$$ of doing incremental upgrades and end up with a pile of ebay junk.

Gota suby friend who got into car audio like this and after two headunits, two sub enclosures, two sets of components, and two different amps, he wished he could have spent all that money on a more cohesive setup the first time.

Then again, if you have the time and $$$ and like being a gearhead DIYer, have fun and good luck!

EDIT: Another tip. Both he and I agreed that the first audio mod that should be done is the HU upgrade. We both agreed that it sets the tone for the subsequent mods, brings immediate improvement to the existing system, and makes it easy to tune future speaker upgrades. Mistakes my friend and I both made....
