Cut Down Steering Lag
Cut Down Steering Lag
Does anyone know how to tighten the steering wheel? I have some play turning the wheel and I would like to cut out/down if I can. If you move my wheel left or right about 1 inch for straight, the car does not turn. I believe it could be fixed with a Nismo z steering box. I want to know if there is any other way to cut the lag down. Thanks.
What would happen if I took the power steering fluid out? Would I damage anything?

-Change tires to high perf with stiff sidewalls
-GT Spec bars are great bang for buck to tighten overall suspension "tightness" and steering feel
-Get some "toe out"-when having alignment done, ask them to put your toe as much "out" as possible. Or, before autox, play with tie rod ends and get some toe out. Make sure you mark factory locations, or car will "wander" on highway.
-Are you st with adj sway bars and adjustable shocks/coilovers? They do change how car reacts to steering input!
Overall-I run within tenth of a sec off M-Coupe's pace and I have no complaints about quickness of G steering. May be you should revise your driving style?Turn steering wheel a bit more?
Do not take you power steering fluid out!

Thanks.
Making the adjustable tie rods shorter will take the lag from the steering wheel movement to car movement out? Will it do anything to the tire wear? If I shorten the rods, will I still wander?
No drop planned. I have AF sways. I have been looking into the GT Specs and Coilovers, but my problem I want to tackle first is the lag in the steering wheel versus the actual car moving. Neither of these products, I believe, should cut the effort at the steering wheel down to get the car to turn.
I have tried to change my driving behavior. I have had 40k miles to get it right. It is not working out. I came from a Z4 which if you shake the steering wheel 10cm back and forth, the car would swerve.
Maybe, I am trying for the impossible, but when I enter a corner, the timing of steering wheel movement with the lag in car movement is frustrating me. I can not get the car to squat and carve into the corner like a spoon though a tub of butter.

The only reason I looked into new tie rods and tie rod ends is because my last car had a problem with the tie rods curving when you dropped the car too much. The tie rod curving would give the steering the same neutral feel of the steering wheel you're trying to get rid of, along with other negatives like really bad bump steer, etc... And since my G is dropped, and it was going to be on the lift for a few days, I decided to try the tie rods and tie rod ends and it works great.
Tire are the most likely culprit in my opinion. What type and size tires are you running and on what size wheels? Have you ever driven the car on different tires and was the problem still present?

The tires are KDW2 245/40/18 (f) and 265/40/18 rear; only type I have used. I am switching to TR1s in a few months. The wheels are OEM sport 18s.

I'm not sure I know what you are talking about.
We just had a track day this past Thurs, and with my suspension set up and tires, I have no steering play. I can barely twitch the wheel to change my line.

Get an alignment if you haven't done this already. Might also try overinflating the tires to see if there's an improvement. If so, then it's probably the tires. If not, probably doesn't tell you much. If it's the tires you might want to try a stretched fit like 225 or 235 up front to improve responsiveness. You can also jack the car up, get a pry bar and check for play.
