Autocross Questions
Hey everyone.
I am considering autocrossing my car this spring.
What would be best tire wise? Keep my potenzas on the 19s (buying new tires) and smoking them off, or stick with my 17s and beating on those tires (have no use for them)
Also how hard is this on your brakes? These cars are heavy. Dont wanna fry my brakes.
Thanks!

...it depends...
Well technically you can't run the 19s in the stock class because they are not the original size for the sedan. Performance wise the 19s would probably be better because they are wider and the tire sidewall is shorter. If they are the coupe 19s, they are no heavier than the non-forged 17s. All this is really irrelevant for your first time out, you will not be competitive. Go have fun and improve your skills. After you have done it a few times, you can start making some more strategic decisions depending on which class you want to compete in. You will not fry your brakes by the way.
eventually when you wear out the rubber on your 17's you can put an R-comp tire on them and use this for your autocross set up. Starting on stock tires though will teach you a lot about grip limitations. Good luck, have fun G.
“All this is really irrelevant for your first time out, you will not be competitive.” No truer words have ever been said. My first time auto crossing went like this...
Out of the gate,
through the slalom,
around the wide left turn,
through the gate at the bottom of the parking lot,
uh...oh...look at all the pretty cones,
try not to run over the flagmen,
please point me to the finish line...

thx
Are you asking about a day at autocross or a day at the road course? (i.e. REAL race track)
In either case, the tires should last several events- a season or more of autoX events, assuming you don't drive like a douchebag and slide all over the place. (The goal is to keep the wheels pointed in the direction you want to go and stuck to the pavement. When you're sliding, you're not putting power down and you're killing tires.)
For road course use, I get 5-6 events out of a set of R comps, or 8-10+ events out of street tires.
