brake noise - winter

Hi there,

Due to living in the city and not having a place to store my G for the winter, I had to leave it outside untouched for a month.

So today (23 deg F) I thought would be a good day to take the car out. Car started somewhat decent, drove fine, but when I applied the brakes I heard a strange noise. It was a rubbing hiss and would give a couple of thumps (drum-sounding) right before I was fully stopped.

Went around the block a few times, but the noise didnt go away. Do you think this is due to the cold weather? Warm up brakes more?
Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Your sound may be some rust build up on the rotor that would likely go away from higher speed stops(more heat in the brakes).

Starting your stored car and running your car around the block serves no beneficial purpose especially in the winter. It may cause unecessary wear and damage from cold start up and leaves more water vapour in the engine and exhaust. You would be better off to leave the car alone unless you are giving it a good long run where all of the condensation can be removed from the engine and exhaust. Slight rust/ partly frozen brakes won't be a worry when warmer temps come and you're driving daily.

thanks for the info

I would have drove the car 50 miles today if I wasnt worried about the brakes. Maybe I'll take it out tonight and see if the hard-braking helps with the noise.

Do you think driving 50 miles once every 3 weeks would be good? Or let it sit till warmer weather arrives?

I would let it sit. However 50 miles would be good drive to clean everything out on a dry day. That would also ensure the battery stays up. Otherwise its wise to disconnect the negative and give it a charge once or twice while in storage.

Just before I store mine I drive very slowly with the handbrake lightly engaged for a hundred feet or so to make sure any moisture or rust is removed.
