URGENT QUESTION: compression rods

My 03 G35 6MT is at the dealer for 60k service... they just called and said the compression rods are cracking and need to be replaced, but it's $650

1) what are compression rods, what do they do, and what will happen if i dont fix this now/soon?

2) is $650 a fair price for this?

3) is this the sort of thing i should take and have done at a private mechanic for a better price (how much would i save?)??

thanks for any input-- i gotta call them back soon!

Well for one, it's not part of the engine, it's part of your suspension.

The compression rods are not what is cracking it is the rubber bushings that crack.I would take it for a second opinion as mine is a 03 with 49,000 and mine are still perfect.

I'd take it to an independent shop if out of warranty. Mine were creaking and I took it to the dealer twice this year. First time, they greased it. 2nd time, they replaced it--but I was still under full warranty. Good luck.

but what are they and what do they do? if i swap out my suspension with shocks/struts from a 350Z, will this problem become a moot issue, or is it a separate component?

I'm not sure on what they do exactly but they are a seperate part of the suspension from struts/shocks...it is a known issue for the bushing to start wearing out on the compression rods and you can hear them start creaking on even Gs with low mileage. In any case, don't pay the dealer $650 for it, you can purchase the part from Riverside Infiniti for much cheaper than that and either install it yourself or get it installed at another shop for cheaper. Also the part has apparently been revised with better bushings or ones that are less prone to wear I think.

just called riverside, they said its $215 for each one... my svc writer didnt say whether it was one or both, but $215 x 2 = $430, not including labor. i asked how much labor is, and he said its usually a 3-hour job, @ $110/hr (dealer rate), thats MORE expensive than my dealer. so is $650 that unreasonable?

Wow really I thought I read in another thread that it was around $160-170each from Riverside. Are you looking for coupe or sedan, think there was a price difference on the part between the two. Also I'm sure someone in your area can recommend an independent shop that will do the job for cheaper, I know some of the guys on here did it themselves as well, maybe they can guide you better.

I just found the thread I was talking about:
