Question Good Rotors and Soft Pads

Lot's of folks may think that this is a stupid or unsafe idea but I was thinking of replacing the rotors and pads on my 05 Dodge pickup using quality rotors and cheap pads. The idea being that pad replacement is quite easy and not too expensive however replacing the rotors is quite a bit more money.
As it might be guessed I am doing the labour myself and don't count this in the equation. If I were to use a soft or quite wearable pad it might extend the rotor life.
This is only my theory and would like some input either way!
