Is the brake pad/rotor issure really a big deal?

I just bought my 04 G35 with 36k miles.

Runs great and stops really well.

I read in some places that people make a big deal about the pads and rotors wearing out extremly fast. I read one that said he had to change them at
13K.

Of course I have no real way of knowing if mine are stock or not.

I drive 80-90% highway, so I dont brake to often. When I do though its from 70mph -0 (you know how traffic is)

I am going to look at my pads this weekend and see if they need to be changed. I hear no squeek nor do I feel any rotor warped feeling in the pedal.

Basically i just wanna know how often YOU change your pads and/or rotors?
I know the rear last longer than the front and its all depending on the way people drive

In my experience the (non brembo) OEM pads/rotors work quite well together for the first little while. However, less than 5 months after getting my car (with new brake pads) I noticed the brakes had lost their 'bite' and a lot of their stopping power (I do 95% city driving so I do wear the brakes more than normal).

I've since replaced my brakes with StopTech rotors and Hawk HPS brake pads and I'm quite happy with them. They stop much harder than my OEM brakes (especially once they get a little warmed up) and I'm sure will end up lasting much longer.

I've driven a couple G's where the brakes were quite obviously worn, felt like I was driving a car with drum brakes.

I'm not sure what the problem with the OEM setup is but I suspect it has more to do with the pads then the rotors. A good set of brake pads (ie Hawk HPS) are quite cheap and are easy to replace yourself. If you say the car stops really well then there's no reason to change the pads, but if you feel yourself losing stopping power over time I would suggest getting a new set of performance brake pads (just make sure you bed them correctly when you replace them).

Hope that helps...

yeah i really feel like its more of a pad issue and most people just like to whine till they get something free

i dont mind changing the pads yearly. $40-$50 bucks a year is cheap considering an oil change is $30-$50 every 3months

when these pads wear i think im gonna go with a better pad, not a "racing" pad but something better
