rear parking brakes..

this is not about the rear brake pads but the parking brake shoes, whats the general life span on these? Yea i know everything is pending driver but say if a clutch average's lifespan is 100k, and tires are on the norm for 50k along with 50k for front and rear pads, what is the parking brake shoe's lifespan?

Is this more of lifetime item? I know the SLIP and the ABS modules mainly use the rear brakes, hence why we replace the rears more often then the fronts but is the parking brake activate as well? or is the parking brake solely control by the e-brake handle/pedal.

You rarely hear people replacing the e-brake shoes, let alone i didn't come across a DIY but the parts are out there, ebay link

so with that being said anyone replace theirs? I rarely use mines as i don't live in a place with a lot of hills or steep inclines but i would like to know that if i ever needed it, it would be there for me.

Most here never adjust their P-brake so it never gets used. Even then, it only really wears out if you accidently drive with the brake on. There is no typical. I went though my brakes when I upgraded to 06 Z units. When I inspected my shoes, they were 95% new. I compared them with new replacements. I just returned the new ones and properly adjusted the shoes so the p-brake actually functioned right.

Only REAL way is to take off the rotor and look at the shoe linings.

Well i tried stopping the car with just the parking brake at like 15mph in a parking lot, the stopping power of just the parking brake pedal is nothing really, yea it stopped the car but compared to other cars it was rather poor. But then again this is the first car i've had with this setup. Hence why the noobish questions when it comes to this. I do plan on replacing the rears pads and rotors shortly, but i'm only at 40k so i find it hard pressed that i need to replace the p-brake shoes.

So i guess its more of less a part that i shouldn't worry too much on. For my own personal info, the p-brake is ONLY controled by the p-brake pedal/handle and nothing else? so in most cases on the 5AT's most are 90%+

It has one function. P-brake. Making sure it's adjusted is the most important thing. Alot of 6mt guys, set it and their cars roll back because they leave it neutral. Also parking the car and relying on the auto tranny puts stress on it IMHO. So make sure it's adjusted right. Most here don't

yes it does put stress on the auto trans if its on an incline or decline but on normal flat or somewhat flat roads it doesn't make a difference. here in IL there isn't too many crazy hills or anything, guess i'll just go and adjust it and let it be. thanks jeff.
