Brakes squeal + Highway vibrations help!

Hey guys,
I apologize ahead of the time for the essay I just wrote.

So my front rotors were replaced and all 4 pads were replaced on my 07 g35 sedan a few months ago, so I highly doubt it's that! But I get a grinding noise whenever I hit the brakes coming from the front passenger-side specifically. At first it was only at low speeds but now I even notice it around 25-30 mph. And then sometimes, on days like today, I didn't notice any noise when I opened the windows to try to listen to them. It seems to happen more than once per tire rotation, if that means anything. Of note, the brakes DON'T make noise in reverse and I don't feel ANYTHING at the brake pedal when I'm braking.

I took the car to Firestone cuz they're real closeby to take a look at it and they popped the wheels off and took a look and couldn't find anything except that my rear pads were worn down so they just changed 'em for me, hence all 4 pads replaced. Then about 1 drive later I noticed the noise again

I also get steering wheel vibrations when I'm going around 70+ and am wondering if it's at all related because this is also a new problem.

The ONLY thing I can think of is that a few months ago I was swapping out my winter tires to summer tires by myself with the bootleg car jack that comes with the car and it actually tipped over because the surface wasn't straight enough and the rotor JUST landed on the inside of my wheel that i had already dismounted. I didn't notice any blemishes or anything so I rejacked the car up, put the summer tire on, and I didn't notice anything immediately after that. It might have been weeks to a month before I started hearing stuff!

So I don't know what it's from, hopefully you guys can help, but if it IS from what I just described, what needs to be looked at specifically? The axle? Balancing? Alignment? I know nothing when it comes to brakes/wheels/tires

I wanted to get some knowledge before I hit up the stealership or go back to a brake shop.

Thank you so much for all of your help!

Hey Robizzle,

I'm no mechanic, but I can maybe give you some things to look into - also assuming you are still having the problem.

My friend had a horror story with his 04 Ram 1500 Hemi - kind of sounded like the same symptoms. When he braked, it almost sounded like he hit a rumbe strip, or even a very rough patch of road. I'm pretty sure he had it taken in as well, and they never found anything.

We ended up looking at it, and his whole caliper was loose, thus creating the noise and slight shimmy when braking. A new caliper firmly tightened solved his problem.

Another thing - though it doesn't sound like the symptoms your experiencing - may be your bearings? Like I said, probably not - but if your absolutely stuck, it may be something you may want to check as well.

from your story sounds like you bent or got your rotors warped. doesn't take much to do that especially since you said you dropped your car on one of them. is the wheel that the car fell on the same one making the noise?

Ok, So I have the same issue and cant seem to fix it. Keep in mind my brakes are worn out, but my rotors seem fine. Just had brand new pilot sport a/s tires put on (all 4) and even straightened out my front driver side rim.

I just cant seem to get rid of this low humming sound (cyclic as the wheel turns) and a light vibration.. again as the wheels turn past 30mph.

Already checked balance on wheels... checking alignment on tuesday next week (although I doubt its that since it isnt pulling to one side)

Car is still under factory warranty, so is there anything else I should be looking at?

Thanks!

I had some vibrations while braking at high speeds (70+ish). Steering wheel and gauge cluster would shake. Put on new front rotors and pads, no more vibrations. Brakes smoothly and quietly. Might try and have your rotors turned or get new ones as any warping will cause the vibrations.

Also something that I have got in the habit of doing is when coming to a dead stop after heavy braking such as exiting a freeway at speed to a stop at an intersection, I give myself enough room so that after I come to a complete stop I can slowly roll forward a little to let the heat dissipate evenly from the rotor instead of leaving that high heat area trapped between the pads and allowing the rest of the rotor to cool. Not sure if it helps in practice but it makes sense to me. Plus for the majority of Texans, we are stop light rollers anyhow so it fits in.

Alright, sorry it took so long!! Both of the rear wheels were bent and the rotor needed to be resurfaced...thats what they told me! It explains the vibration at high speed and the scraping noise when braking. I made a big stink about them having sold the g to me that way and they resurfaced the rotors and ordered me new wheels for the rear...in the meantime the replaced one of the tires that had a bubble and used my brand new full spare in the trunk...

Finally got mine fixed!!!! 24 hrs before my warranty expired

So after straightening the rims, doing an alignment, and getting new tires... the vibration was still there.

After creating a storm at the dealership, turns out it was a wheel bearing issue on the front passenger side of the car.

All vibrations are gone and back to new!
