Can't machine slotted brake rotors?

I took my car to a local brake shop to have the brakes looked at and I mentioned to the tech that I was feeling some vibration when I stepped on the pedal and thought the front rotors were warped. He looked that them and said he couldn't machine them because they are slotted and then if he did, the slots would be gone. I my mind I'm thinking WTF? He said I'd have to replace them. Again, I was thinking WTF? I can't believe slotted rotors can't be machined. I mean he's probably only taking off small amount of material right? Not enough to get down to the grooves right? Anyway, just wondering if anyone else out there with slotted rotors has had the same thing told to them. I think the guy was either lazy to do it or didn't have the right machine to do it, or perhaps he wanted me to spend more and have it replaced.

Some shops will turn slotted rotors and some won't. Look around for one that does.

So you're saying it can be done but they can be damaged in the process? If they machine it down to the level of the slots isn't that most likely past the allowable thickness? For example for ATE rotors, when the rotor wears down to the bottom of the slots the rotor should be replaced.

they shouldn't take more than 1/16" or so.

Your rotors will be fine. I think they are just worried about their expensive machine.
