Shim or no shim

I am replacing the pads on my 05 coupe (non-brembo) with akebono ceramic pads. Do you absolutely have to use the shims (oem) on the replacement pads. Or are "shims" only for oem pads?

thanks.

I got the same question also, Got a 04 but mine don't come with a shim. Do I need to get shims for them?

I believe some pads come with shims (mine did Akebono) I just did my front brakes today so I didn't use the oem shims. I think if you get pads without shims, common sense would be to use the oem? I think? lol

Try to reuse the OEM shims if you can as it will cut down on squealing/noise. However, quite honestly, the OEM shims are acoustically designed for the OEM pads, so may not work as well on aftermarket pads anyway.
