can the rear suspension be made stiffer without a drop ?

Hello.

2005 g35 sedan 6mt rwd sport susp. stock (other than a new front sway from hotchkis)

I need to replace my rear shocks and would like to consider replacing the rear springs as well. The tires are slightly larger (previous owner did this) than stock. What's on the car now: 245-45-18. Hence the overall tire diameter is 9mm larger than stock (235-45-18). I'm concerned about something rubbing/ bottoming when I have the car loaded up with the family etc.

Can I buy stiffer rear springs that don't lower the car? I'm not doing this for performance. I just want to be able to load up the car and have things safe (and avoid handling like a water buffalo).

thanks

That larger tire size is not going to make the tires more likely to rub. The car would hit the bumpstops first. Unless you are exceeding the max weight of the car (listed on a sticker on the driver's door jamb), you should be withing the operating limits of the suspension.

Why would you only want to increase the rear spring rate?

Why only a front aftermarket sway bar? That would cause more understeer.

If you are still concerned about the larger tires, why not replace them instead of the suspension?

On my 06 6mt sedan: I've tried revised Z springs, which lower the car a bit, have the same front rate and 33% stiffer rear rate than stock. The oversteer was fun, but I couldn't get traction when powering out of corners. It was also not a comfortable ride. I'm currently on Eibach prokit sedan springs. I like the progressive rate springs which are softer when driving normally but firm up when driving aggressively.

thanks. I'll look into the Z springs.. the stiffer front sway was to reduce body roll and reduce oversteer. I find the car too fish-taily. Stiffer rear sways would reduce body roll in the rear but also increase oversteer.

I want stiffer springs in the rear to stop the back end from becoming sloppy/droopy when the car is loaded up in vacation mode. This is not an ultra-high performance issue.

The revised Z springs will make the car more likely to fishtail. Have you had the alignment checked yet? Alignment can have a big effect on how nervous the car feels. I find that my 06 6mt sedan oversteers less when it has weight in the back. In fact there is a noticeable difference between a full and near empty fuel tank.
