washing calipers/brake parts with water?

I picked up a set of salvaged calipers from another member. The car was probably sitting in a muddy junk yard for awhile. Mud is caked on. I picked up two cans of Brake Kleen and started spraying. I never used this stuff before. It works pretty good, except, it evaporates very fast. I pretty much used a whole can on one front caliper and it's not even clean yet. So, I'm wondering if i can wash everything with a hose and brush, then spray them with Brake Kleen after I get most of the caked on mud and brake dust off. Obviously, I'm not too worried about the outside of the calipers, but rather the insides; the moving parts like pistons and such.

Thanks

Use Simple Green and a brush. Rinse with water. No need to waste Brake Kleen on mud.

^^^ +1. The pistons are pretty well sealed from all sorts of road grime and chemicals, so I wouldn't worry too much about cleaning them around the edges, especially since they've been in mud all this time. Once they're cleaned up, check to see if the pistons move smoothly in and out, do this several times.

Good luck
