Strut Replacement Problems - Squeaking Noise
Strut Replacement Problems - Squeaking Noise
Alright, what am I doing wrong here? I've recently given my suspension a full overhaul. Stock setup: Shocks, struts, ball joints, end links, tie rod ends, compression rods, all new. I'm only lowered on Z springs. Used KYB shocks & struts with Moog mounts.
My right front strut is giving me a headache. A week after install it developed a metallic rattle/squeak sound. Ordered a warranty replacement for the strut mount, now the new mount is starting to make the same noise. Is it possible to get two bad strut mounts in a row, or am I installing something wrong?
Double checked everything. If I remove the nut for the strut and spray lithium grease it quiets down some. I'm really just confused how that can squeak so much, there's no moving parts.

So, I figured out the noise was actually coming from the left side. The warranty replacement did have a minor difference in the hardware used to bolt the mount to the chassis. Essentially both of the original new mounts were faulty. I was pretty fed up with the noise, so I replaced both Moog mounts (faulty original & replacement) with my original OEM mounts with 200k miles on them, and there is no sound!
Since I had replaced the struts so much, I figured out how to remove the mount without having to rent a spring compressor. Had the old stock ones put back on in about an hour and a half.
One thing you can try before fully replacing the mount is to tighten the nut on the strut as tight as possible. What I did was pop the strut bellow down (the dust boot) and clamp onto the shaft with some vice-grips. (Yes, this isn't recommended, due to scoring the shaft a little, but it's up so close to the mount that it will never "enter" the shock to mess up seals.) Once clamped, tighten the nut with a breaker bar. I was able to get about 1/8-1/4 turn tighter. Then you can slide the dust boot back into place and see if it helps. Don't know if I should have tried that originally, but I've been replacing shocks/struts and suspension work on my own cars for years and have never ran into this issue.
