Frozen caliper guide pin
 

While working on my front brakes today I could not remove the lower guide pin on the driver side. It spins freely but won't budge in or out even with vice grips. Is that considered frozen? Just looking for some feedback before I buy a new caliper.

Could be. If it spins but won't slide, then I'd bet the wrong lube was used and caused the rubber on the tip of the pin to swell. Need to get it out somehow.

Time to replace the caliper. Now that I winter drive the G it tends to get one caliper per year bad. That, andits been 12 years since it came with those calipers lol.

I had one of my rear caliper guide pins completely seized up with no spinning or budging at all. I probably could have gotten it out if I had a vice, but gave up and bought some new/reman Cardone calipers with the beefy weather coating all way around from Rockauto. For direct replacement OEM you can't beat the price - after core exchange of course. I could regret it, we'll see. I'll let you know once I get the car back together.

You're probably right. The grease inside was all black which I doubt is silicone. I did have a hard time getting the other rubber slide pins back in when I took them out as well.

Just gonna do all 4. I replaced a rear one a couple years ago and it seems like it rusted to hell within a week. Not a bad price for stoptech remanufactured from rockauto. Plan on doing a suspension overhaul soon so I'll add it to the list

Only thing that sucks about reman calipers is that they strip the coating off. Paint them with some silver caliper paint to avoid that rusty new caliper look.

I had this issue with my front caliper guide pins. Luckily I found a solution online on how to remove them. I bought a 30 dollar blow torch from depot and heated up the caliper, applied a little PB blaster and voila! The heat from the blow torch loosened the rusted pin and let it loose.

After removing the pin it's advisable to use new pins, and also clean the caliper bracket of rust. Apply a generous amount of lubricant to the pins to avoid future seizing. Hope this helps
