Cracked Rear Rotors - 03 Coupe

I took my 03 Coupe with its 19000 miles into a San Diego Infiniti dealer last week for brake work (pads and rotors if necessary) that I thought would be covered under the "new" brake warrantee. While they had it I thought I would also spring for a $35 oil change. (I passed on the 15k mile, $300 "service.") When I went to pick it up, I was told that I would have to pay $600 to replace both rear rotors. Apparently, both rears were cracked (all the way through) and its the dealer's opinion that the cracks were caused by driving with the parking brake on. I told them that when I do apply the parking brake, I usually accidentally release it with my foot when I get in the car, but I haven't accidentally driven the distance they believe was necessary to create enough heat to crack the rotors. Anyway, they won't replace the rotors under warrantee.

As there is still hope (I'm waiting to hear back from Infiniti Customer Service) I don't want to talk too badly about the dealer. Besides, they still have my car. I'm also going to have them show me the rotors today.

Any suggestions on how to proceed? If they won't cover it, any suggestions for new rotors, I'll probably do it myself. If I upgrade rears, I'll have to do the fronts as well, right?

I would appreciate any advice.

By the way, my loaner car is an 04 sedan. What a completely different car. The transmission does seem a little bit smoother though. Also, I modified my Blose stereo a while ago so I can't really tell, but does the sedan and/or the 04 G35 Blose system sound better than the Blose de 03 coupe? I'm also still trying to figure out how to reprogram the dvd rom so it can play real dvd's. I think I may know the solution, but need some advice from someone who knows alot more than me about encoding.

Thanks again.

sorry to hear about your situation. I don't think rotors should crack no matter how hard you drive and brake or whatever the dealer tells you. The rotors seem defective and should be replaced under warranty. Just keep fighting them. Good luck man...

Thanks. I'm going to call customer service back right now to see if there's anything new.

Just an update for anyone that interested. I got my car back today without new rotors. They wouldn't fix them under warrantee, Infinity consumer affairs doesn't have any answers yet and I wasn't going to the dealer $600 to replace them. Does anyone have any suggestions for replacements?

I got one more call today before picking up the car. The dealer said that I had air in my brake llines and said that they could fix it, but it would be $100. I said "You mean the brakes have to be bled, right?" Right. You would think if they are replacing the brake pads under warrantee they could go ahead and bleed the brakes. It took me all of about 15 min. to do it myself when I got home. It was nice of them to wash the car for me though.

So, almost 2 weeks later I have new brake pads, an oil change and a clearn car. It is nice to have my car back. Now I've got to finish my stereo upgrades and get the windows tinted.

We have noticed this is a common problem. In our Rear BBK using OE caliper we upgraded the rotors to reinforced ribs, this prevents the rotor from cracking/warping, and oversized the rotor to 332mm. Here is a photo of the common problem:

Thanks. What's your opinion on the cause of the cracks?

Hey
I had the same problem with my used 03 G35 sedan I bought in may from Infiniti of Tustin and the same price to fix it of $600,my only saving grace was 1, I had only had the car for 4k miles and 2, I had already brought the car in 3 times for brake problems, so they fixed them but IT still drives like the parking brake is dragging, and I confirmed that all new parts were installed at the major fix, and I must admit that Infiniti of tustin has been very cool about repairing it, But I am taking it in tomorrow for you guessed it brake! I would do several thing if I were in your shoes, talk to your dealerships general manager about the problems ,call Infiniti's national customer service and explain your situation and see if they can offer any assistance, and if you really feel up to a trip drive your car up from San Diego (When I was looking for my G35 I had a negative experience with Discovery Infiniti) to Tustin and let them take a look at it ,Tom Mc.. I can't remember his last name, is the service writer who is handling me,so he's familiar with this issue. my name is Anthony Williams.
good luck.
