Staggered setup?

Hello all...

I'm new the G35 scene... getting a '05 sedan. Wondering if a staggered setup would be recommended or just keep the same all around for daily driving...Thanks in advance.

Staggered Setup

If you know exactly what you want from a staggered setup then go ahead as it does have some handling benefits (assuming that you use a proper stagger).
Short list of pros & cons that I can think of:
Pros:
1) improved steering response
2) possible more traction out back without front steering penalty
3) possible to improve balance of car w/o changing springs and/or anti-roll bars
Cons?:
1) loss of front to rear tire rotation facility
2) possible decreased braking performance if a smaller than OEM front tire is used?
3) possible interference/rubbing with wider tire in front?
4) slight decrease of load carrying capacity if smaller front tire is used?
Any more experienced members please chime in
Good luck

Staggered = better looks and performance benefit's that will see the highest payout for road course work or anything where corners are taken at speeds greater then you'd typically see in the city, canyon carving ect.

Non staggered= less looks but better performance for autocross or in town driving where you will only see low speed corners with tighter radius. Problem is, going past 245's on the front of a sedan means more and more ugly tire shoved out from the confines of the fender as your eye travel's down from the hub centerline.

simple actually.......Z track wheels, 18x8 fronts and 18x8.5 rears, 245/45/18 tires on all four corners.........with this setup, which is more pronounced, understeer or oversteer?

I also use trail braking in most corners (view points diverge on TBing, some say we should not have to use it if the car is setup right (zero understeer), I say I’ll set up my car so I can keep my speed up as long as possible into the turn.).

Knowing that I’ll brake deep into a corner, it’s good to have more tires on the rear to keep the car from fishtailing. The bigger tires will also help get the power down on corner exit.

So, more tire is needed on the rear for the type of balance I like. 295 might be pushing it a bit. 275s are a bit cheaper and will clear the fender/suspension in the rear. I go with that as a base and go down one step for the front tires, ending up with 255 wide in the front.

255/40R17(f) and 275/40R17(r) with RA1s is the setup I’ll use this summer. I’m still 235/40R18 and 255/40R18 for the street.

AutoX will be different. The speeds are not as high, leading to less overall weight transfer, so less chance for the rear to give up. Plus, tires will be cold for most of the run. You would want as much cold grip you can get right from the start. So you fill the fenders with the biggest front tires you can get to compensate the lower grip and get less understeer. The rearend braking loose will be a good thing on tight circuits as it helps you turn with less steering input.

My 2 cents…
I am biased towards the autox setup because I will never do high speed course work, nor will I corner hard on the street at speeds above 70mph. So my ideal payoff is to stuff as much front tire that I can get away with on the car. Though ironically I'm on a 245/265 setup. I've installed spacers in the front to clear 265's, but I'm concerned about the paint being damaged on the sides of the front fenders.

Gsedan35, What is your offset again? I see you have RPM2's. What size are those? I'm too lazy to search today. Thanks.

I just put on my new shoes on Friday. 245/275 19s. It feels like I added a sway bar. (I haven't done that yet, but I was thinking about it.) I am really happy with the outcome - it feels rock solid. Offsets were 35 front 48 rear. No fit problems at all.

18x8 45mm

I know that a 265 tire doesn't ideally belong on a 8" rim, but it does get done rather requently because of b-stock rules for the Z. Carter Thompson, who placed 6ths at nationals 2 years ago (behind all the S2Ks), run 275 Hoosiers on 17" sized wheels (7.5" front, 8" rear). I'm now on a 255/265 setup because I could not get 265 right KD for the front. Ironically they came off backorder like a week later
