Help! Trade in question - more to less expensive?

As posted before I am considering selling/trading my car and going to a large SUV or truck for a few reasons (more room, tow my boat, more road trips, etc). If I do, there is a good chance I wont try to get something brand new or higher end. If so, I'll be going from a car worth around $29k trade in to something I'll be buying for, say, $25k.

Has anyone traded in for a car that is LESS expensive, and how did the dealer work that out? I could sell outright, but then I have to pay another $1500 in tax on the purchase that I avoid by trading in. Anyone?

As far as I know, trade-in value has no influence on the price of the car you're purchasing. Stealer judges the trade-in value based on the year, mileages, etc.....of the trade-in and jack you from there. Usually, if you get a real good price on your purchase (below invoices), they will jack you on the trade-in value to make money from there.

If you sell your car to a private owner, you can always list a very low price on the pink sheet as long as both parties agree. I recently sold my previous car for 9.5k and we both agree to list 2.5k on the pink sheet to avoid high taxation.

Focus on the purchase of the new SUV. The first question you'll get asked is if your looking to trade in you're current car. Just say you're just interested in buying an SUV. Once you've got the price agreed on you can say you were thinking about private sale on the car but might do a trade-in if they can give you a good deal.

As a side note, I just purchased the same type of SUV you're looking for. I don't know what you're looking at, but I would highly recommend you look at a used Lincoln Navigator. They're ~$50K-$55K new but because they aren't a hot brand you can pick them up used for $24k-$28k depending on if you need 4x4 and what year. For instance, I got down to either a 2004 with 15K miles for $27 or a 2003 with 34K miles for $25K.

The other SUVs I looked at where Tahoes, Youkons, Sequoias and QX56. Only the QX56 was even close to the Navigator. The Qx56 is probably nicer, but it's had a lot of quality issues which I'm painfully aware of since they're built in my home town. They're also more expensive and you can't get a 2003 for less than $33K. The other SUVs have

Normally I wouldn't touch a domestic car, but the one type of car that Ford does well are trucks and SUVs so I took the plunge. There are two trim levels, but the higher Ultimate is more common and comes with power running boards, power lift gate, 8 way pawer front seats, power folding 3rd row seats, air suspension, dual zone air, heated/cooled seats, towing package, etc...You name the feature, and this SUV has it. It's also apparently one of the best SUVs for towing, although I can't speak to that specifically, just what I've read.

Thanks for the help, there is definitely some overlapping in the SUVs weve looked at. Im very familiar with them, I was in SUVs for over 10 years straight before going to a G coupe. Im just trying to figure out it itd be better to sell and then buy or trade in, and what would be involved on the more detailed end. Mainly, does anyone forsee a dealer having an issue buying a trade in car for 30k and then selling a car for 25k. Not the most common trade but I dont see why there would be a prob.
