Steal of a deal... help!
Steal of a deal... help!
Here's the deal. My folks are willing to sell me my dad's '04 G35 for a steal of a deal. It has probably about 60K miles on it. Mostly freeway miles since my dad drives a lot.
Here's what I have to pay for it.
$8500 that was left over from my stock sales that was meant to pay for school but doesn't have to since I have graduated.
I also have to give him my 99 G20t which has 130,000 miles on it.
How can I pass this up? Thats a 04 coupe for like 12K.
I guess I am trying to figure out if I can afford it.
I'm a 22 yr old male living alone in Scottsdale, AZ. I have a clean driving record. Graduated from college with honors.
I was wondering what you guys pay for insurance?
What are your maintenance costs like?
Gas?
Please any information would help seeing as I am living on a very limited budget. I'd hate to pass this up, but I have to be responsible about i to. I mean, there is nothing wrong with my car, so is the upgrade neccessary?

Maintenace cost is not too bad if you don't mod it. Oil change, cleaning supplies, misc engine supplies like fuel system cleaner and such, some tools and a ramp for minor maintenance, etc. Then gas, you'll get bout 17-19mpg on the coupe with 50/50 highway and city if you drive conservatively. If you have a lead foot expect that to go down to ~15mpg. Tires wear quickly on this car, so expect to get a new set every year and a half or so, probably a bit under that.
If you're modding then prepare to get ****ed in the ***. $3500 wheels and tires, $1000 for a drop (with camber adjustment), $1750 for a kit (and that's for a replica with a good deal from an autoshop), $1500 for an exhaust and install, and then add on another couple hundred bucks for all the stupid stuff you're gonna want to put on it like overlays, CAI, etc.
FI is just out of the question for you.
So, go with the car if you don't mind driving it bone stock or don't mind being broke or in debt when the mod bug hits you. Otherwise stick with your older car until it poops out on you.

I am going to green light it. Pops just put brand new tires on it the day before he showed up. I have no problem leaving it stock. I am excited.
Worse comes to worse, I can sell it and pretty much pay cash for something more reasonable.

The difference between 20mpg and 30mpg is 250 gallons of gas if you drive 15K/year. Tires run about $150 more per year than a normal car. My point being that maintenance is dwarfed by the initial cost of almost any car and isn't much of a factor.
Unless your dad wouldn't be offended if you sold it and realized a ~$15K profit, go for it and have fun. You'll be able to drive it for years and still probably break close to even with the money you put in. It doesn't get much better than that when purchasing a car. If you bought another car for $12K, it wouldn't be worth anything the same amount of time later.

I'd say buy it. Insurance will most likely stay the same, I had a 94 g20 payin 180/mth. Got the g35 and pay a whooping 190/mth. As people say the maintanence really shouldnt be a factor when it comes to the overall cost of this car.
All depending on how far you drive i'm factoring $200-250/mth on gas 4 fillups a month getting 200-250miles between fills. For me i don't have anywhere to really drive except to work(20miles roun trip) but i've been going to philly (120m round trip) the past few weeks, will do b-more this weekend so this of course makes me spend more gas money
I don't know the cost of maint. yet seeing i've had the car 10days. It will be semi-pricey and you should know considering we both have had infiniti's before.
By the car and it will suck if you have to pinch pennies. Being a recent grad i'm not pinching pennies to afford the car, i just want to be frugle and save as much as possible on everything. Rich people stay rich by respecting thier money!
