Considering a G35 QUESTIONS..

Ok so my dad is considering a G35 after years of owning classic cars he went and got a new mustang and well its a pile of ****, so we looked around and we both really like the g35 I like the sedan but he wants a coupe but anyways.

1. Are these cars reliable

2. What kind of work can be done to get them going faster he is not a fan of nitrous so do they have better heads/intake are headers easy to install yada yada. What about rear end gears are they easy to swap out or kind of a pain?

3. Kind of back to question 1 are their any major problems in the g35 line through the years or in a certain year range that should be avoided like fords 3.8 head gasket problem and such.

4. I wont lie I know nothing about these cars are they based off of a Nissan like the Lincoln Town car is basically a different bodied Crown Victoria or are they their own line of cars?

5. Best years I am not sure when they did a model change but when was the last one, How long has the latest one been running does it have a good track record and so on and so forth.

6. When these cars do break down how much are parts kind has to do with question 4 if they are based off of another car I am sure it will be cheaper but are like the German Car Prices for parts and labor on the more pain in the *** things.

I think that is it sorry for not knowing more thanks for all the help.

I'm pretty new to the G35 scene but i'll try to help you out.

1. My g/f's mom has one. My neighbor had one (has a Msomthing5 now) and my friend had one. I haven't heard about any major problems. My g/f's mom had some issues with her brakes but I think that was fixed.

2. Well from what I have heard the usual: intake, exhaust, chip. You could do a turbo setup too if you wanted.

3. Don't know

4. The g35 is a Nissan Skyline in Japan I think.

5. The '07 Sedan is new and the '08 Coupe will be new.

6. Well the car is japanese so probably pretty reliable and not too expensive to fix.

Again i'm pretty new here. Hopefully someone that knows more can give their input.

I'll try to answer what I know...

The 3.5 liter engine on the G35, is known as the VQ, and some variant of it has been in use by Nissan in one way or another for over 10 years now I believe. In all honesty, I don't know too much about parts cost, but these engines are bulletproof.

I'm not aware of any gearing for the rear diff. I know the car has an available LSD, so.

The only modifications to the engine that I’m aware of are plenum modifications (Mostly shifts your power band around, you actually end up LOSING 2-3 HP at top end, but gain 10-14 in the midrange if your engine is the 298 HP REV engine), and intake/exhaust mods. You can obviously go forced induction, but with any type of boost, you can pretty much throw your warranty, and a good deal of reliability out the window. I never dabbled in heads, so I’m unsure about the availability of a ported head.

The coupes saw an update in 2006, but it was only a minor cosmetic lift, and the addition of Bluetooth to the car's stereo.

I'm the friend that the above poster was talking about, and owned my G for about 10 months. I had originally owned a 275 HP Mini Cooper S with a highly modified suspension, so naturally the G35 didn't seem too "Sporty" to me. I ended up selling it after 10 months and purchased another Cooper S. This one is currently only about 210 HP, but it's still a fun car . I found the 6 speed G to be WAY too notchy, and the clutch engagement was a bit spotty (Difficult to predict the engagement point, it wasn't consistent). This may have been specific to my G, I'm unsure. I never had any issues at all with the car, but you wouldn't expect to in such a short period of time.

As dummpty said, the sedans have already been redesigned (My father owns one, solid car, nothing really positive or negative to say about it). The Coupe's are expecting a redesign for the 2008 model year, and those should be out in early fall. The only confirmed fact about the coupes is that they will be using a new 3.7 liter displacement VQ, that presumably will pump out another 20-30 HP from where the current 3.5 VQ is at. It's been rumored that the engine will migrate across their line, so all the new cars will be named 37 (G37, M37, FX37, etc...). To be honest most of it is speculation, I haven't heard much of anything about the release of the car (Haven't really been looking either though ).

Anyway, I hope you've managed to get some shred of information out of my post, I know it's not exactly an English essay .

Best models are 05 and up.
Great cars. Mine is almost 2 years old, have over 35k on it, and I had only three visits to the dealer for minor problems (rear axle clicking, throttle body replacement, HID module replacement) Runs great.
Go with 08 coupe.........more power and supposedly better looking car.

I don't remember the exact details, but I'm pretty sure the Skyline most people are familiar with is known as the GT in Japan. The AWD Monster... I may be mistaken, it's been a while since i've read one of the "Omg I have a skyline/No you don't noob" threads on here
