Out Of State Buying?

A few cars I've seen are out of state, I'd love to buy in-state but i'm looking for a rare G35 that doesn't pop up too often and I found one just the way I like it. Bad idea?

Once in CA, does the rules apply for it as if it were originally here? (Such as lemon law, etc)
I'd be flying there, taking up to 24 hour test drive (a least a few hour test drive) and the buying if it all works what.

Thoughts on this?

once you register the car in CA, you should be able to exercise your lemon law rights. This however also means you will have to get the vehicle DMV verified, pay CA taxes on the purchase price and applicable registration fees.

I just purchased a 05 G Sedan 6spd from Boulder and I'm in St Louis. I had a relative near by who test drove the car and gave it the . The car is being delivered to me tomorrow by truck transport to my house. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Yeah I'd have to fly there to check it out. I did some reading about bringing to CA, but would there be any other fees I'd need to pay? Like out of state taxes/fees in the state I bought it?

You should not pay any taxes in the state you bought it, if you are registering it in another state...

I bought cars in California and Texas, and had them shipped to Washington, neither times did I have to pay any taxes to those states. Taxes are paid when you register that car. In my case, they were collected by the local DMV when I registered my car.

I plan to fly there, check it out and then buy. So all I would pay in the state I buy it is the price of the car? What about the "fees" dealers always ask for?

Be careful when buying a car from out of state, if this is a new car make sure it meets California Emission standards. If it is a 49-State vehicle with less than 7,500 miles you will not be able to register the vehicle in California. As for the fees, all you will be paying is the price of the vehicle since you are not a resident of that state so sales tax does not apply as well as registration. You will be paying that when you register the car in California.

I'd make sure it has the 50 state emission before I bought it of course.

I bought my car in VA.

Paid price of the car to the VA dealer, including dealer fees for "paperwork" or whatever.

In MD I paid sales tax, registration/titling fees, etc, and (this is the big one) had to pass inspection - which the car did in VA, but didn't in MD which has stricter regulations.

Ouch, what did you have to do to pass it? It didn't have the 50 state emissions?

It actually wasn't emissions... Maryland has a one-time vehicle inspection, so it's very strict. I had illegal tint (guy let it slide), one rear tire was too worn (damn uneven tire wear, the outside looked brand new so I didn't even think to look) and my front brake pads were down to nearly nothing, so they didn't pass either.

I worked out a deal with the used car dealer to split the cost of the tires/brake pads. I'm embarrassed I (a) didn't notice the tires and brake pads myself and (b) rushed into the sale and didn't have an independent mechanic inspect the car first (never made that mistake before, never will again).

I think i'm just going to wait a few months before going and looking out of state, buying in state will save so much hassle.
