Things to look out for when purchasing a G.
Hi guys, I'm new to the forums and although I don't have a G35 ~yet~ I plan on purchasing one in the next two weeks. I've tried searching the forums but I couldn't find a thread similar to the question I'm about to ask.
So I'm planning on purchasing a 2004-2005 G35 coupe (Looking at two currently one 2004 has 119,000 KM on it and the other 2005; 106,000 KM both auto.. don't hate me
). So my question is what can I watch out for when I go to inspect the car in person (and of course I will have a mechanic look at it)
So far from research I found the general problems are as follows:
-Electric issues (With the radio and windows) : Check to see both function fully
-Camber wear on front tires
-Headgasket leak (Which I was told is mostly an issue with the revvup engines).
-OC issues: Check oil pan although this one might be a bit difficult since I won't have a lift with me
So are there any other things I should check/inspect/watchout for?
Thanks in advance

btw would the compression rod bushing problem coincide with the infamous axle click? this is definitely something to look for too
Hmm any specific "test" to check the condition of the compression rods? For ball joints I was just going to sit on top of the car and bounce up and down... Not fool proof but it would be decent enough until a mechanic checked the car out. What can I do to "check" the compression rods?
The seat tear at entry is too common and is a design flaw in those seats.
As far as cmpression rod bushings, U will hear some clunking over bumps. If everything else is golden thats common problem too and can be fixed. Dash crack, bad paint, marked oil pan, low oil (tho likely full if serviced before put up forsale) are deal breakers to me. U can also check the carfax oil change intervals if their noted.
Its all about what u can deal with.

I will definitely keep the compression rod and dash cracks in mind. As far as the seat goes, as long as it doesn't look like a tiger was let loose and mauled it I'm fine with it (After all it is a 9 year old car). The marked oil pan I don't think I would be able to see myself until the car is lifted.

G35 sedan w/ too much money in mods

Oil consumption has nothing to do with a leaky oil pan or headgasket. It is caused by inferior rings being used in the rev-up motors which can only be fixed with an engine rebuild. If you get the 5AT the chance of an OC issue goes way down but it's known to happen to them as well. To check the compression rod and lower control arm bushings for failure, the best way is to get under the car and visually inspect them. The arms should be centered in the bushing, if they sit to one side or the other they have worn out and need replacing.
Overall the G is a mostly reliable car with a few exceptions like all manufacturers have. I've got 116K on mine and have spent less than $500 in other than routine maintenance in the time I've owned it.

So I'm looking to get a G35 as well, what is this Marked Oil Pan everyone speak of? If the car is known to have OC issue, how would one check it when he is looking to buy the car at the spot?
I know you can check the oil level but that happens slowly over the week. (ie. my current car, I have to add 1qrt of oil every week lol) Checking exhaust fumes during the drive is another indication but seems to happen at random. Is there a fool proof way of checking OC issue?
Thanks/Regards.

marked oil pan shows that the car was put on an OC test. this can be taken either way if the mark is there and the same engine is still there, it may have passed the test. but the mark is there in the first place because someone must have complained about losing oil. try to keep the car idling while you talking and blip it and watch for smoke. most cars that smoke smoke off idle. Longer idle the better.
Any dealer should have a lift. Tell them you want to look under, should be no problem.
