Infiniti Noob. Wonder what to look out for in my first purchase

I am new to Infiniti and a noob to buying used cars. I am looking to purchase a G35 or G37 in the next few weeks and I want to know about the car when I go in to negotiate at these grimey used dealerships. So I have a few questions. If you have some information that I didn't ask for, I am open to suggestions. I am ok with being pointed to another post if it details the answer I need:
  1. What are the common problems with the G35/37?
  2. What should I watch out for to make sure I am getting my money worth?
  3. I have seen quite a few cars over 80k miles. What are the common problems that occur at high miles?
  4. Have there been any major recalls that I should make sure have been fixed?

Thanks for all the help guys. Looking forward to getting my first Infiniti.

Welcome! I'll try to answer your questions as best as possible.

Question 1. Go to https://g35driver.com/forums/g35-sed...edan-faqs.html and look at the TSBs and recalls. You'll get a better idea of what the common problems are.

Question 2. Bring a mechanic with you to inspect the car. If you are unable to for whatever reason, test the suspension my putting weight on each corner of the car. I bought my G with blown shocks in the rear and didn't find out until I replaced them with coilovers.

Pop the hood and look for any welding on the car's frame. If you see any sign of any welding then there's a good chance the vehicle was involved in an accident. Bring it up with the car salesman and inspect what other areas of the car may have been affected.

Look for any difference in the paint on the car's front and rear bumpers. If you see the paint is not even, shinier on one side, or does not fully match the paint on the rest of the car then you want to ask why the bumper was painted. Again, we're looking to see if the car was in any accidents. Just because it's not on the carfax doesn't mean the vehicle was not in an accident before.

Question 3. Poor engine performance. Some people are stupid and lazy so they don't do their oil changes at the right time or use cheap oil. When you test drive the car don't be afraid to push it to its limits. Whenever I test drive a car I always tell the salesman that I am going to make sharp turns, floor the gas at times, and drive at high speeds. This way they are ready and can tell me what roads I can go on. Usually they will put you on the highway. In my opinion a car is a big investment therefore I am going to make sure I am not buying something with a fked up transmission or engine.

Question 4. See answer to question 1.

Good luck! Hope this helps.

1. The common problems are too numerous to list.
2. Watch out for any car that has an Infiniti logo on it.
3. See answer 1.
4. Depends on the year but there have been recalls on Headlights, Air Bags, Seats, Gas Hoses, and ECU. There has been a couple hundred technical service bulletins.

He's just honest... But not to a Jibberjabbers level of troll. He does say the true fault to our cars to those that are interested. He also says the positives. But who asks for positives when looking into a used car?

Ive built 3 G35s/G37 over the past 10 years. I have personally wrenched on almost every part on each platform. Ive done turbo, supercharger, nitrous, custom lighting, stereo and everything in between. I often help those you need technical help with their car. But I firmly believe that, while the platform has alot of merits, it is not worth buying as a daily driver. It looks great and has decent power for the money, but not worth the headaches. Rather than help people with their constant issues after they buy the car, I help people avoid them all together by purchasing something more reliable. I could take up an entire page listing out the common issues I have personally dealt with and seen on the forum in the past 10 years.

Your personal issues with your cars, is just that. That is not the majority..Plenty of people with no issues in the long run..Of course when you start building on any car(Turbo,Supercharger,etc..) You will have reliability issues

Ive been on this forum 8 years, you've been here for 8 months. I not only speak for issues I have personally had but for the many many issues reported by those in the community over the years.

I've had my 2005 G35 for about 6 years as a daily driver now and I've only had minor problems with it, it has never broken down on me or left me stranded but once due to an old battery that I overlooked. I have lots of bolt on mods but no FI and I have not experienced any engine issues. The only things that have gone out on the car are one window motor and one door lock actuator. I replaced them and they have been working fine for over 2 years now. My entire drivetrain, brakes, A/C, seats, lights, etc work just fine.
