Kelly's quotes MSRP @ $34,590. But if it were my buying it, nothing more that $31k or else I'd buy a brand spanking new 06'.

Yeah probably cuz you THOUGHT you deserved better price when infact you car was worth whatever carmax quoted you. Ive sold 3 cars to car max, one was immaculate, one was pretty used up other was in the middle. Always got more than Kelly Blue book becuase my cars were well maintained. And carmax was anywhere between 1500 to 3200 more than what the dealer offered me.

Same here. I have nothing but good things to say about CarMax. I also sold three cars there and always got well over KBB wholesale, excellent condition. Problem is some people expect CarMax to pay then retail for their car. Also at CarMax, mods are a negative and not a plus when calculating a car's value.

Keep in mind that some states, if you are trading in, allow the dealer to subtract the value of the trade from the selling price of the new car BEFORE calculating final sales tax. So in my case, IL, i was looking at a $45,000 car... If I trade and get 31,000 for the g then my taxes on the new car are only around $850. If I sell my G and buy the car outright (no trade in) then I pay taxes on the full $45,000 to a tune of $3100. So that trade better be on the upside of $2300 or else it does me no favors.

I realize all states don't do this - but it's worth discovering if yours does for obvious reasons.

best,
Peet

Be careful, Carmax quoted me $23,000 for my 2005 WRX STi w/ 4200 miles, which i owned in November, and bought in September for $31,400. I was told, ".....not to be firm on this price, it may be a high number since the car is not here for us to look at", then I said, this is not the WRX, he said, " Yes, its the WRX STi w/ 300HP". Woaaaaaahh...!!!???

I've sold two cars to Carmax too, both transactions were really smooth and I got a good price. I did decline one other sale to them because their quote was too low. It's worth checking out, though. Seems like if the car is well maintained the price they quote is usually at or above kbb.
