Canada is Getting Old

I was watching the news and they were talking about how Canada is getting older as a country.

The average age of Canadians in 1965 was 26
The average age of Canadians in 1981 was 31
The average age of Canadians in 2006 is 38
They predict that by 2015, the average age will be 47.

Obviously the reason why this is happening is becuase people are not having as many kids as the baby boomers did. In 2006, the average family is having 1.5 kids, while the US average is 2.1.

Anyways, I thought it was pretty interesting so I thought I would share.

Interesting stuff but not surprising.

The year I was born was the peak of baby boomers and I'm now the average age of the predicted year 2015. No year before or after 1959 has had more births.

With no children we're also helping to lower that average number of children you refer to.

PS I don't consider 47 old. I can still whip most 20 year olds.

Interesting stuff, Shane, indeed I can take credit for raising the average age of Canadians....and for lowing the birthrate (I had 1 child)..

Demographics have changed dramatically since I was young(er)....

LOL Deane, I'm not quite as young as you but I can still whip those 20 years olds (with my cane... )

This country is going to be in big trouble if it does not either encourage childbirth or start offing the elderly. Seriously, there should be huge tax breaks for having children. Family allowances, g.s.t rebates, etc. Who the hell is going to look after all us old folks in 20 or 30 years?

Quebec has had tax breaks for years. Greater immigration is part of the answer too.

Financially I plan to look after myself. If I'm in a retirement home that's another matter though. We'll need to have younger folks to wheel us around.

Look after yourself is the key. I personally don't think the world needs any more kids.

Woot! This is telling me that I'm well above average and will likely be so for the rest of my life! ... Oh...

+1.

The world doesn't need anymore kids in certain countries or in unwanted/neglected parental situations.

Ya, that's just a personal opinion thing. I'm personally a huge fan of adoption, and would adopt if I ever decided I wanted a child. I can understand why people want their own kids, I just think we're at a point where it's time to pony-up and help the world out a bit by adopting rather than adding more. Again, just imo.

the world might not need more kids but, Canada does imo. Also consider as we get older the country's political landscape will change. It'll be interesting to see what the politics are like in this country in 2025
