Thanks

I was there but it was many years ago back in '87. I went to Rio for 2 weeks and that is the only area we visited. It was an incredible trip staying on Copacabana beach. I think it may be Carnival time there now so you will have to be immersed in that. It is the worlds biggest Mardi Gras and the entire population goes into vacation mode over it and prepares for about a month. Enjoy.

It's an incredible lush green scenery and much nicer than Florida or the Caribbean. Expect it to be very hot as it is now their summer time. You'll want to see Corcavado - the mountain where the statue of Christ is. We rented a driver for several days. It was very cheap and split between 3 of us. He spoke some English and took us everywhere worthwhile seeing. They are very crazy drivers in Rio and at night for some reason they do not drive with lights on.

We also took a helicopter tour which was well worth the money. The geography makes for a beautiful trip. Stay away or take your chances making your way to the Flavellas- the poor living in shacks(at best) on the side of the mountain with the poorest at the top. Best to see this by helicopter if you're interested.

Watch yourself very carefully. There are a lot of thieves that work in pairs or groups and they love tourists. As well don't be surprised to be frequently asked if you want sex - from both male and females and some very young boys. At that time money was exchanged at unofficial places- pretty well all jewellery stores. Also do not eat food from vendors selling from stands unless you want to be sick.

I'll be interested in hearing the cost of things from your trip. When we went it was ridiculously cheap. A beer was less than 10 cents and a meal at a little cafe was a couple of dollars.

Have a safe trip.

Edit: just noticed your heading Carnaval

Thanks Guys

Yes we are going to Rio, it is going to be +33 weather. I need a break from this ugly mess. So to rent a driver will a hotel have that? we were told to try to stay away from bus especially at night. Also what hot clubs should we go to.

I can't wait

I was there for two weeks just prior to Carnaval so didn't see the festivities in full swing. However Brazilians live for Carnaval and pretty much go into a party state for a month before. Enjoy.

You might want to consider going to a soccer game as well if the home team is playing. At that time it was the worlds biggest stadium something like 200k people IIRC. We went and enjoyed the atmosphere. We also took a day tour on a large sail boat that plyed us with food and drink while visiting a couple of islands. That was great.

It will also be very humid so it will feel pretty warm. I'm surprised it won't be hotter. Most days I was there it was in the upper 30's. You Tdot folks are used to that.

I can't recall exactly how we got the driver but think our hotel must have helped us with that. Basically the guy was a private taxi driver. We told him we wanted to see all the sites in Rio. He drove us everywhere and waited until we were finished our site seeing.

I could understand why you were told to stay away from buses. Another thing to consider- back then the taxis didn't have meters. Negotiate your price before getting in. If its not right walk far away and flag down another one. We had a few cabs waving off the other taxi since he wanted the fare.

As to clubs it was 20 years ago when I was there so can't recall the names and I'm sure lots has changed since then. I believe one was called Plataforma.

Stay safe Eric and have a good trip.

Deane
