I wanted to order clear corners from the States and was wondering what the duty costs would be on the item (item value is about $50 US.) Any ideas?

 

I ordered mine from Yuichi and paid very little in shipping, and nothing for duty.
I found out from the customs peeps that there should be no duty on merchandise made in North America. You are required to pay GST tho, and possibly some brokerage on the shipment, but not much.

ya no duties only tax plus a $5 handling fee and sometimes you get lucky and dont pay anything as customs let it through.
i might be interested in a set too, if you live in TO we can order together and probably save on shipping charges (although its not much)

Got mine last week, no duties are charged. I believe gsedanman is right, no duties is charge if it's made in U.S. (or from U.S.?) I think even if it's from Japan usually they don't charge import duty either because the Japanese company are really good on getting away with those charges for you by either put it as a sample or gift.

 

neohh, did you have to pay brokerage fees?

It's not the duty that will getcha fuming over costs.
It's the brokerage fees to get the item over the border that hurts the most. The most expensive are United Postal Service and Fedex. Always try and have the item sent via United State Postal Service as it is only a $5 brokerage fee. It may take longer to arrive but it usually saves you 30 to $50. There are other ways to save on the fees but they are illegal and the GST police are not user friendly.
The best and cheapest way for volume and large items is have a custom broker situated in the USA and have them clear the item through customs and ship it on the Canadian side.

You can also request that they ship it with a label that says "Recipient will act as own broker". This works well as long as you are reasonably close to the Customs Office.

UPS is the worst for shipping to Canada IMO. The brokage fee will leave you broke. Regular US postage is good enough for me, might take an extra day or two but its worth it.

I got my clear corners today and you were right choboter. UPS dinged me with $40 worth of brokerage fees. The total cost was $50 USD + $40 CAD, with the exchange rate these lights cost me over $110 CAD. I am going to have to secure these lights on my G somehow so that they won't get stolen.

UPS just sent me a bill for a $0.30 adjustment from my last rip-off with them...

I ordered the $50 clear corners too from Courtesy and paid an extra $4 to get them to NOT ship UPS. Yesterday I got an email from UPS with a tracking number If they show up and UPS wants money I am refusing delivery.

I received an email from UPS as well. It looks like you will be getting a UPS delivery. UPS charged me $5.19 PST also. Can they do that since I didn't buy them from Canada? They charged me a broker fee plus GST and PST on the broker fee. What a rip off for something that was only supposed to cost me $15 shipping ended up costing me $60.
