We get better mileage in Canada

A 2006 study found that the average Canadian walks about 900 miles a year.
Another study found that Canadians drink an average of 22 gallons of beer a year. That means, on average, Canadians get about 41 miles per gallon

LOL, when I was running a lot I averaged about 3000 miles per year. 22 gallons was probably about right so I got about 136 miles per gallon not including walking. My running shoes cost about $1250/year so 3-4 times the cost of beer.
Cheers.

Wow, Deane, that's some impressive fuel, er, beer economy. You must have been running on hi-test.

Hey, the reward many times was the beer afterwards.

Deane,

I apologize for asking a serious and slightly OT question here, but what mileage do you change out your running shoes... 500?... less?

I've been trying to keep it under 700-800 miles/pair in recent years, but I shudder to remember the old days - running thousands of miles
on each pair of shoes with Shoe Goo patching and occasional resoling.

Harry, I know what you mean about the old days!

It's a bit of a complicated answer but I usually change out by 500 miles. Most people seem to get 500-700 miles out of their shoes. I have about 3 pairs on the go at all times- 2 of one kind and 1 of another model. The lower mileage pair of the 2 of a kind I use for longer runs for maximum cushioning and the more used ones for shorter recovery runs. The different one I will throw into the mix once or twice a week on a speed day and/or a recovery day to give the joints/muscles a change. I regularly put a new one into the rotation so I've got max cushioning on the days I think I'll need it.

I actually have about 7+ pair in play since I've got some dedicated just to racing of specific distances. Hopefully I can get past this injury and get back out there using them.

Now back to that beer....

^^ Quite the system you have there - I normally work with only 2 pair at a time. What kind of injury are you working through, if you don't mind me asking?

Sorry Craig,

I've been off since early October with acute hamstring tendonitis that is being very stubborn. I have started being able to run a few minutes a few times a week very recently. The bike and eliptical just don't cut it.

Two pairs probably works just as well.

G/L with that. Having been through severe achilles tendonitis, I know how persistent it can be.

I've heard about that. I've had to be careful there too at the attachment point on my heel. Good to hear you've been able to soldier on.

My doc said this is the only case he has ever seen with my particular issue. It's both legs too.

However two months ago I couldn't walk more than 5 minutes so we're moving forward.

Sorry for hijacking your beer thread, Swivelman. Two things I've always had are an allergy to beer and an addiction to running, and the the latter got my attention during the discussion.
